I promised a few friends I'd post this, but I figure that it might be appreciated by folks here geeking out.

This one was my labor of love-and still in the family.

I used a metallic red apple paint form Rustoleum I think. I like to think it came out pretty cool, and the color matches the silver pretty well. Masking was a bit of a pain but not too horrible. At the same time I upgraded the motherboard to a 600 MHz (it was 500), so it was a twofer deal.

Thoughts?

It took me a while to get around to it. The thing is that it was waaaaaay out of warranty and I had a spare motherboard and only paid $400 for it....and I couldn't resist.

Glad you like it though-it was hard to say goodbye to it (substituted by a 12" PB 867) but like I said, its in the family (grandma's iMac 233 fried and she'll be using this one instead).

Actually, she had never used a typewriter before my dad got her the Bondi iMac. Now she connects to the internet on a daily basis and does videoconferencing with my dad, uncle and aunt (her three kids).

Now is that a trip or what? Maybe one of these days I'll coerce my dad to get her an iSight! Think it could be painted to match?

Very nice job.

I think I'll do my 700mhz iBook in "PowerBook silver." Then, when I'm finished with it, I can put it up on eBay as a 12" PowerBook. Do you anyone would know?

That looks great! I assume you took it all apart to paint it, right? Very cool custom job!

Hey guys, I saw a site once that featured all kinds of customized Macs. Anyone have a link to something like that?

Now why does that make me think 'Etch-a-Sketch'?

Thanks for all the input-I wonder if there's a market for doing this for other people....

Re: etch-a-sketch: yeah, I think they were separated at birth. This draws a bit faster though, and crashes less often!

For those interested, taking this puppy apart was not as hard as you'd think. It was harder for me because I upgraded the motherboard at the same time, but otherwise it would not have been too bad.

The paint on the inside I removed fairly easily by soaking the plastic in rubbing alcohol (cheap at the local drugstore), then gently rubbing off the soaked paint with a soft, non-abrasive sponge (almost any non-abrasive dishwashing sponge will do).

Masking was something that I took extra care in though. Painting was pretty simple once the machine was masked.

Cheers,
-d
