WTF? I just got the DVD today, and Pizza Hut has replaced Taco Bell. Any mention of Taco Bell has been altered by a voiceover to Pizza Hut; I've not yet reached the point where they actually visit "Taco Bell", but... what the hell?

Yep, they've even changed the logo to the Pizza Hut one.

Though they missed the decals on the window, which still have the Taco Bell symbol...

Thanks for that. That was my first thought, but then I dismissed it, as Taco Bell is present here too... isn't it in Europe?

Either way, it's bloody annoying.

This was done on the original release. The version I saw in 1996 had Pizza Hut. I didn't notice any irregularities, but then again it wasn't a very memorable movie though

I could care less what he was eating where. It was a mediocre movie and it's been eight years since I saw it. They may have changed the place of eating, but since we had neither Taco Bell nor Pizza Hut in Norway at the time I could care less. I did get the "in the future the fancy restaurant is a Pizza Hut (or Taco Bell)" joke though.

Since you're in Tulsa, you'd get the Region 1 DVD, which most likely has Taco Bell instead of Pizza Hut. I think it was only the overseas markets which suffered from the editing.

Our VHS and TV versions are unedited, though, which is strange.

It's on on Friday or Saturday night, so I'll have to watch to make sure...

Anyway, I'll take a few clips of the dubbing/compositing for those who wanna see it.

Taco Bell is just funnier sounding than pizza hut. It's not like it's complimentary to taco bell, they are kind of slamming it, so I don't see why they'd go to so much trouble to dub/edit in Pizza Hut.

Resume your amusing insults.

Nobody would notice those here, since there IS NO Taco Bell. And the dubbing doesn't really cut through the German synchronization.

And I liked Demolition Man too. Not enough to buy the DVD, but it was fun.

speaking of changing movies to accommodate different cultures. I think it kind of sucks that other countries get really crappy translations from American movies. I'm talking about subtitling. It's horrible in some cases. Words get lost in translation, some words don't even get bothered to be translated and sometimes entire sentences are left out. It takes away so much from a movie.

It happens often the other way around too. I've seen foreign films that are translated horribly into english. I'll sit and listen to conversations in a movie and at the same time read subtitling that is not even close to what the characters are really saying.

Subtitles are a special case, because there usually isn't enough time to read the entire text and still watch the movie.

what I always find embarrassing is when it's obvious that the translators simply didn't understand what was being said. In German-synchronized Simpsons episodes, you can take virtually any line that doesn't work at all in German, translate it literally back to English, and work out exactly what they misunderstood - partly phonetically, partly because they simply didn't have the cultural background to understand a joke.

My favorite is actually in "Kindergarten Cop", where they mistranslate the Gettysburg Address (of all things to **** up!) as "Four hundred and seven years ago..."
This on a major Hollywood production; that just kills me everytime.

Subtitling beats dubbing, though.

I'm grateful that this country never resorted to that - people up here actually speak and understand english quite well and I'd attribute it to the exposure.

Is the Schwarzenegger Presidential Library still in the film, BTW?

Agreed. One can get more out of a movie by reading subtitles than being distracted by out of sync audio and visuals.

Then I'm glad I have the original US DVD release - Taco Bell and all.

And yup, the reference to the Schwartzeneger Library is even funnier now!

I hereby formally apologize to the Australian people for inflicting that culinary blight upon you.

(Sorry, I have little respect for meat that comes dried in a package labelled "add hot water" and "suitable for human consumption".)
