Hello all,
I recentlly purchased a new 15 inch Al powerbook (1.5 GHz, 512MB RAM, 54000rpm HD). The machine is great, but I have one question. Is it abnormal that there is a low humming the entire time the powerbook is on? Though I'm not sure, I believe its the fan on its lowest setting. The humming sound is definately audible, though not distracting, so I don't mind very much. But I'm simply wondering if this is abnormal. From my experience, I would not describe the powerbook as running "completely silent", as some post I have seen.

I have the same PB, and I lto hear what sounds like a very *low* speed fan but its really the HD. unfortunatly the HD isn't as quiet as I initially hoped for.

I thought it might be the harddrive. Do people with the lower speed HDs have the same issue?

So it IS the HD. I had an "old" 1ghz PB with a 4200rpm HD and it never made this noise. As soon as the new one (1.5 5400 80gb HD) came in, I noticed this low hum. I thought it was defective. It's a small annoyance and I'm not used to it yet. I just loved how my old PB was super quiet with an intermittent "camera clicking" sound. Oh well...
