It seems that the new displays are DVI only.

While I admired Steve's dedication to reducing cable clutter, ADC has always limited the appeal of Apple's displays to non mac users and has complicated/delayed the introduction of the latest in 3D video cards.

I have to conclude that this is a smart move on Apple's part. Graphics card manufacturers can now use a standardized PCB for both platforms and will only have to alter the bios when porting to Mac.

I'd say this is a smart choice as well...just leaves the tons of people w/ ADC connectors on their cards w/ no choice but to buy an adapater to run 2 DVI displays. But all in all, good move.

Hey ... I own an ADC connector machine and an ADC monitor. Even *I* admit that this is a GREAT move.

Apple is VERY competitive in the display market. I know of MANY PC folks who would have bought the last generation monitor if they could get it to work without weird and expensive adapters.

This could be a mini-cash cow in the making.

Since the new displays include FireWire ports, and the existing ADC spec couldn't support the 30" display, Apple had no choice but to kill ADC.

To play Devil's advocate they COULD have created a dual link ADC.

And yet again, another Apple display connector bites the dust.

It's funny, everyone was talking about how great it was that Apple FINALLY got with the program and started providing VGA on the PowerMac G3 with the introduction of the B&W G3 in 1999. Then VGA took a backseat to yet another weird, proprietary monitor connection within a year. Let's hope the same thing doesn't happen again. I think after three attempts at pushing a Mac-only monitor port, they've learned their lesson.

I really hope you're right.

DVI with FW/USB2 and the combo cable was a very smart move.

Well, as long as Apple includes DVI, it's trivial for them to convert DVI to VGA (that's what I do on my G5). I don't imagine a $3300 monitor + required $600 video card will have mass market appeal though. They'd do a lot better if their 20" ($1299) was cheaper, although it's only $100-$200 more than its competitors.

Maybe I'm just cheap. When I buy a new machine, I don't budget for a monitor. I just move my 20" Dell Trinitron over to the new machine and keep working.
