I would like an Office-compatible app to keep around just for compatibility purposes (every now and then someone sends me a .doc, or I have to create/edit one for someone), but I don't want to pay for Office.
Which free alternative do you prefer and why?

"OpenOffice" is a completely different product made by different people. What you're talking about is always called "OpenOffice.org."

I prefer NeoOffice/J because it's everything that OO.o is but works more like a native app. Specifically, I'm having a hell of a time getting the Japanese text input to work in X11, whereas Neo/J supports all of the standard OS X input methods without making the user jump through any hoops.

I used NeoOffice/J for a while, but now that OO.o 1.1.2 is out, its added functionality beats the marginal advantages Neo had. It's also much faster to load than 1.0.3 was under X11.

The author is currently working on moving Neo/J to the OO.o 1.1.2 codebase.

I use the new cocoa Abiword when I need to pretty print stuff, otherwise I use XEmacs.

I voted other because, although I know I'm dreaming, I want an office suite from Apple, or at least a kicked-up Appleworks!

Difficult to say which one is the best... so here's an article on the state of KOffice, currently: if KOffice could get a development boost, it could probably become an excellent - and far more "native" than others, maybe - option on OS X (also considering, for example, that KWord is rather unique in being a DTP-style word processor)...

Marc Liyanage has written Installing and Tuning OpenOffice on Mac OS X, which may be of interest to some of you.

Great link!

Another interesting thing is that OpenOffice.org can be "themed", in order to look more like the OS or desktop environment in use: for example, for KDE, there is this - for OS X, there could be something similar, in the future...
