Hi,
I just received my new Powerbook 15" 1.5Ghz CTO computer today for my birthday
I CTO it with the 5200RPM hard drive upgrade and noticed that when I received my powerbook, the hard drive has a 16MB Cache. (googled model number)

Does all the new 1.5ghz 5200rpm hds have the 16MB cache or am I just lucky?

Sorry if this has already been asked

Thanks, Paul

Hey,
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I messed up, mean to be 5400RPM.

I just opened up my Powerbook (todays my birthday hehe) and the drive is:

TOSHIBA MK8026GAX (CTO 80gb 5400RPM)

http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_It...m=TOSMK8026GAX

The product specs say its a 16mb cache.?

Anyone else have this hard drive? Is it actually 16mb cache!?!

thanks, Paul

Yeah, looks like you're right... Here is the full spec sheet on the 80GB/5400 drive from Toshiba:

http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storag..._Datasheet.pdf

The Toshiba definitely appears to have a 16MB cache while the Hitachi has an 8MB cache. I wonder if they've switched from one drive to the other or if they just rely on both suppliers (which is probably the case)... I ordered my 15" PowerBook towards the end of May and got it early June and it has the Toshiba in it.

Yeah, I guess we are lucky!

With this 16mb cache, is it comparable to a 7200rpm 8mb cache deskop drive? or is it comparable to a 7200rpm laptop drive?

I got an extra bonus too, this replacement Powerbook from Apple came with a 1gb DDR memory chip (uses 1 slot), but I only ordered with the tech support rep a 512mb DDR memory chip (1 slot) yay

thanks for the replies -paul
