So, as a gift to myself, I am uprading from my nearly three year old Quicksilver 733 tower to a new DP1.8 G5.
Old Setup: QS 733 / 40GB / 27GB / 768MB / Superdrive / Zip250 / RADEON 9000
New setup: DP1.8 / 80GB / 1.25GB / 8xSuperdrive / RADEON 9600
Also buying a 17" Sony LCD (can't really afford the Apple ), a set of decent Altec Lansing speakers and RAM from Crucial (as the system only ships with 256MB and I don't feel like paying a premium for ram).
This ought to be fun.
And yes, I'm paying for this - there goes most of my summer earnings...

Congrats on the new setup. Quite the upgrade indeed.
I'm hoping that those 3.0Ghz machines come out in January so I can upgrade my Mac then.

That's what I'm waiting for too. Almost bit the bullet and got a 2.5... but I'd much prefer a 3. Besides, my dually 1.42 is still going strong, and I always try and double my processing speed with each upgrade, if I can help it.

I'm going to wait (80 is enough for now) and scrape together the $187 to buy a 250GB SATA drive from newegg in a little while, but I decided I would do that upgrade when I needed to. Anyway, I've got an external 120GB firewire drive anyway. Space is not a huge issue... yet.

And if you look back to what my non-desktop system is, you'll be pulling hair.
12" 1.33Ghz Powerbook. (Graduation Present)
the G5 is coming out of my pocket and my pocket alone.

You mean a tax reprieve? It seems to me that the words tax and holiday should not follow one another.
Congratulations on your upgrade. G5s are great, aren't they? I went from an 8600/300 and an iBook 466 (which I'm typing on right now) to a DP 2.0, so I got quite an upgrade.

I'll be going from a G3 400MHz iMac to a 1.5GHz G4 PowerBook. Should be quite the increase!
I couldn't imagine the increase going from that to a G5!

Update:
Apple had stock of the Gen1 DP2.0 machines... for $150 more than a new (crippled) 1.8, so I should have my new baby on the 27th (apple had a supply delay)

Are you running the M$ OS on the unit or did you find a Linux-oid object. I've got a Sharp Zaurus 5500 running OpenZaurus myself...
So, I'm getting 512 stock on the G5 + 1GB from crucial... drool

I think I'll wait for the dual 3.2ghz powermac g5... that way I replace this dual 800 with something 4 times faster...
Then again I might not even be able to get THAT.
