Hopefully there will be a hack to allow monitor spanning. Apple site only says that mirroring is capable. LAME!!!

Ya you know that low end home market is all about buying another expensive monitor and spanning it.

Looks ... interesting. I don't know about all the blank space down on the front there, with the Apple logo. Seems a bit out of place. And the big-ass "iMAC~!!!1!" logo on the back. Hmmph. Well, looks like a damn monitor. Cool.
Heh, I knew it: 5200 64MB. How incredibly lame. Apple's got their head up their ass when it comes to graphics.

okay, i don't know anything about computer design. but it looks a lot like the sony vaios i've seen, perhaps because sony is the only company I know that has had any success in selling this type of AIO design.

I agree on both. That blank space is bothering me...
And is Apple talking to VW on making big ass logos for their products now? Geesh.

It should have been used for front speakers, instead the fire down.

It looks pretty mmuch exactly as I thought it would. Not much innovation or originality.
Not that it's a bad thing really. I kinda like the thing.
I'm holding out for a G5 Powerbook though.

nah, the heat gets blown out the back. the hard drive gets fresh air - before the CPU gets it.
PS, The new iMac is a real letdown as far as the way it looks. Laughable, almost. The unique 'hybrid' laptop/desktop hardware configuration is its saving grace. Otherwise, it's simply a plastic box.
Days like this are what peecee trolls live for.

Doesn't look like it based on that graphic. Cool air comes in the bottom and is blown out that slit on the top back. That means the hard drive gets all the hot air passed by it.

looks like there may be a fan or two near the top in that picture. Look for the round dome-shaped thingies. I'm betting the larger one (away from the hard drive) is a "squirrel cage" fan which provides airflow for the mainboard and everything else except the CPU. It's possible that the smaller dome shaped thingy is a fan, as well. I doubt Apple provided a dedicated fan for the hard drive, but you never know.
EDIT:
On second glance, I'm gonna say that the smaller roundish dome thingy is the motor that drives the fan/impeller assembly - which is the larger of the two round thingies. I'd suggest that the fan is belt-driven. This arrangement saves space. No need for a motor AND the fan blades to be stacked on top of one another.
Let's see how wrong I turn out to be. prolly way off.
EDIT AGAIN:
No, I'm right.
FINAL EDIT (after viewing hi-res image):
Nope. It's two distinct fans.

Did you read the rest of my post or did you just stop at the first sentence?
What else is there to say? It's an LCD moniter with a G5 in the back. Exactly what everyone has been talking about for like 3 years now.
I also said I liked the thing. What's with the rolly eyes? Sheesh.

I'd have to check, but I think the space is the speakers - I assume some nxt flat panel tech might be involved if true.

Also, it's fascinating to me how they seem to be marketing it primarily to iPod users. Sign of the times.

For a computer, it's not bad..
Compared to the g4 imac however, that thing is a piece of crap. When macrumors posted a link a picture before apple had it up on the site, I thought it was some bad prank.
The bezel at the bottom is just.. an abomination compared to the g4 imac.. seriously. That thing was the pinnacle of apple design..
This thing is average. Computer with the guts behind the LCD? Been there done that. Apple's version is just a bit uglier than usual.
The specs aren't all that either. The g5 is alright but a geforce 5200? Maaaan.

I think the new iMac will really appeal to pro-sumers usually opting for the powermacs. I think it looks like a great machine and getting a 1.8Ghz G5 with a 20" screen for $1,899 is quite remarkable. I'll either get a 2Ghz G5 or a high-end iMac. Up until now I've only had powermacs but this one really appeals to me!

I wouldn't think so. One's an entertainment device, the other is a computer. The market is iPod users, you're saying, or people who they're trying to woo towards iPods? I really think the market isn't quite identical.
I'm just saying that computers weren't always marketed as "just like an iPod except better!"

The iMac G4 was fine until I needed to break out the thermal paste to swap the memory inside the dome. Now, it and the HD are extremely accessible.
The G5 is alright? You know you're right: I'd gladly keep a 1.25 G4 on a 167 mhz bus for a Radeon 9800.

Apple's marketing is slick. "From the creators of the iPod." Then they make the new iMac look similar enough to the iPod.
A lot of people who recognize the iPod name, but don't know it comes from Apple. It's just a chic gadget. Now people who have an iPod (versus an "Apple" iPod) will get an iMac without ever know it was from Apple.

RICH PEOPLE
if u can afford a $300-400 mp3 player when a perfectly good $50 one is available let me introduce you to the iMac. A $1200-1900 computer when perfectly good $800 computers are available.

fhoubi: there is a good reason for the back not being metal, if you had an iPod, you would know. I have an iPod now (yay), and the metal back of this 4" high little thing is a bitch to keep clean from fingerprints and whatever, now scale that up to the size of this iMac, how would you like to keep that clean after you've been moving, adjusting, plugging in, inserting CD's and switching the power on and off for a few days. Bitch to keep clean x100!
As for the iMac itself, I like it. I don't mind the graphics card, if you want to play games, buy a PlayStation, if you want a serious workhorse computer, get a G5 tower. The design is nice, and I can also see it being sold as a business computer if they got the specs/price right for the market (I havent checked the business store site). That iMac, packed with the VESA mount, bluetooth and BT keyboard and mouse, put it on an office or internet cafe cubicle desk wall and away you go!
iMac G5 VESA mount - $29

Apple clearly agrees with your logic here, but it essentially amounts to ignoring reality. The PC gaming market is huge. There are several genres of games that just don't translate well to consoles, including most simulation/strategy games and first person shooters.
For those who don't want games, the GeForce 5200 is fine. But I guess my point is that putting in a halfway decent graphics card wouldn't exactly have been an expensive propositionn, considering the overall price of the computer and the PC market segment in which it will compete.

Yee-Ha.
Apple is not coming out with a tablet. They are not doing well in the US markets for a reason: they're not as useful as the hype would suggest. Apple does not do overrated.

I suspect there's some sort of cowling attached to the inside of the back that meets up with that vent at the top of the CPU heat sink that routes the hot air from the CPU up and to the right. (note how the other fans route the air up and to the left) What we need now is a pic of the inside of the back panel.

Before the "heat" and "cool" graphics were just red and blue gradients. Now they're wavy. They were on top of that quick.
The iMac design isn't so bad, I decided, though I really don't like all that blank space just sitting there. It feels so odd. I might've actually considered one if they graphics card weren't so friggin' lame. The thing is desperate for at least a 9600 pro.
