my friend's laptop has a folder that refuses to be deleted. Inside the folder are other folders with a weird symbol as their name. If I click on the folders they disappear -- gone, not a trace, but they will come back when I close and reopen the folder. I have never seen anytihng like this.
I have tried every trick I know in order to delete the folder but my attempts are futile.
Even doing rm as root doesnt work. Is there another option that I don't know about? (besides reinstalling os x)

The folder is in the trash and I believe is WAS called EnglishProj or something. I tried changing the name, and now it is called DELETE. I believe it is a left over from unstialling FCP 4.5

You could change permissions or delete it from another computer networked to that one. Or use the Terminal:
sudo rm filename

Hmm we have gone through similar things like this many times and it seems there is always a different solution. For me, I used to use stuffit to compress the problem file with the option to delete original after compression selected and then delete the new compressed file. The app cocktail has been useful to some. Command line has been useful to some but for me it seemed to delete the contents of my problem file but reduced it to its icon (went from 100mb to a few k but it was still there). I have never tried solving this remotely but it may work. In the end I had other problems on my disk (my fault) and wiped it after backing up what I needed.

What message do you get when you try to sudo rm it?
If that doesn't work you might have catalog file corruption or something. Use Disk Utility or DiskWarrior or something.

You've found the portal out of The Matrix - only the chosen one knows how to use it .
On a serious note, it sounds like some sort of hard disk corruption like Angus_D said. Try running a disk repair utility of sorts. Disk Warrior is generally the preferred option. I've never seen a folder I couldn't delete before. You are using sudo rm -R or sudo rm -RP?
Also, have you tried get info to see the size or maybe renaming the folder?
