Do you think that safari will be updated prior 2.0 in Tiger? If not, why the delay? Is apple satisfied with its performance (1.2x) in light of the fact that 1.3 DP had been released?

I think the existence of "1.3" builds indicates that there will be another update before Tiger's 2.0.

I really begining to think that the reason Apple has not released Safari 1.3+ is that they are make significant changes under the hood of Tiger to support some kind of Quartz 2d extreme. Perhaps the Safari development at 1.3 was scraped in light of this. There was a thread at
Ars about QD2E and its relationship to Core Image. Maybe Apple does indeed have something up its sleeve. BTW the link to the video in that thread still worked as of this AM.

I just installed Safari 1.3 DP5, and it's blindingly fast.

How does it compare to Firefox 1.0 on your machine in terms of speed?

Agreed. Way faster.

However I'm getting a ton of strange bugs, especially on some forums...

No way. I cant believe that it could be faster than FF. That would mean that pages come up literally as you press the link. Prove me wrong - send the program

I don't doubt that Safari could surpass Firefox's speed. But extensions still make it a win for Firefox in my book.

Safari 1.3 is using the same webkit as Safari 2.0 . It's Safari 2.0 without the features. I'm yet to install but it's tempting

Ok so the speed is supposed to be faster than FF 1.0. Cool. Now what about compatibility? Is it improved over the current Safari release? How does it compare to FF 1.0?

There are some new bugs in it.
Like Gmail does not work with 1.3 ( the page just loads a white page with nothing on it ) and the menus on the left hand side of spymac.com do not work as they should. So far these are the only big bugs I found.

Edit: I take the spymac thing back. it looks like they changed something on their site and broke the menu. The same thing happens in Firefox.

I really have no idea, but it's likely that Safari 1.3 won't be released until Tiger is released (or when they freeze the WebKit code for Tiger) since it uses the same WebKit as the one in Tiger. Or they won't release it at all.

Safari 1.3 has a very strange problem with readonly textareas. Kinda hard to explain, but if you want details check out this thread on another forum: http://www.simplemachines.org/commun...?topic=19716.0

Other oddities abound, I hope they do a lot more work before they release it...
