Now with the release of the iPod Shuffle, I am wondering why Apple has not released their own branded version of a USB flash drive. I use them all the time and they seem to be always increasing in popularity. I would love a white usb stick with the apple logo that glows white when inserted into my imac or an ibook. Apple seems to make other pheripherals, I am just suprised they havent decided to enter this market yet. With apples high markup on products, they'd make a ton of money, I know I'd buy one.

The iPod shuffle is a USB flash drive. A very affordable one that also plays nicely with iTunes.

Because there are already about 3.2x10^28 models of the flash drives on the market already?

The iPod Shuffle *is* a flash drive, too.

USB flash drives are a commodity. Apple excels at making excellent products and adding value. They don't make commodity products.

And Apple's markups are high. Most people would buy a functionally-equivalent one from SanDisk or whatever that costs less.

There'd really be no sense in Apple doing it.

For the exact same reason they no longer sell external hard drives.
We need less Democrats and Republicans, and more people that think for themselves.

I hate to just echo what everyone else already mentioned, but the primary reason I bought the shuffle was to use it as a flash drive. I use the about 256mb out of the 1gig for music, but the rest for files. The fact that it is made by apple, plays nice with itunes, etc... is just a bonus.

So the answer to your questions is, "they do."

Note that the Apple-branded hard drives weren't made by Apple, they were Quantum drives using the Apple logo under license. I believe they were not sold by Apple, either, and I know that support was provided by Quantum.

I had a 40 MB Apple-branded external hard drive for my Mac/SE that weighed about 20 lbs and was the side of an encyclopedia.

Ah, those were the days...
