Just noticed it was clipped at the bottom, at least on all my machines. Has it always been this way?

Would it violate an NDA to say if it's been fixed in Tiger?

Never noticed that before, but you're right. I think that you'll find that in fact it applies to any character with a tail (or whatever the typographical term is for bits that go lower than normal). However, it's not so obvious with the other characters, as they don't do anything interesting below the clip line (ie, the "g" curves below there and swings back up, but "p" and "y" are just straight lines). It certainly affects "j", which also has the curvacious tail.

I had thought some of the other descenders were clipped, but I wasn't sure. Good call on checking the "j".

It happens to ALL descenders, though mostly noticeable on the g and j. It's a small issue though, and if Apple's left it this way 'till now (since the dock was created??), I wouldn't expect Tiger to be any different. I'd rather they fix the shadows under inactive windows!

Whew, so I'm not the only one who sees an imperfect shadow under inactive windows!

And I just noticed the problem with descenders in Dock captions the other day after installing iWork. Now the cropped y in Keynote and g in Pages annoy me every time!

Can any Tiger users comment on these imperfections in an otherwise perfect interface?

At the bottom of an inactive window's shadow, where it fades out, there is a distinct horizontal line.

It's the dark line a few pixels below the inactive window.

Without the explanation I thought it was the slight white outline at the corner of the window...

To be fair, although I can see the line you're talking about, it isn't noticeable on anything but a solid colour background.

I have the new 1.5GHz 12" Powerbook and I don't see the line. I used to see it on earlier machines. I wonder if it's dependent upon the GPU?

Aww, I hate bugs. I never noticed the shadow before, but now it stands out so well. How do our brains work like that? I have a 15" 1.5 GHz PB and it definetely shows up. It's also quite easy to find, and my background is not solid.

Edit: I've never had a dock item with a descender. Damnit, that's ugly!

It might be a JPG artifact in your screenshot, or your brain playing tricks on you.

Nope, it's a known bug in the window shadows. It's just not very noticeable unless you are picky.

It might be, but it's not. You can zoom in on any window shadow yourself to see it in action.

Good enough for me. I don't spend enough time mousing over things in the Dock to be bothered by the descender problem, but damned if my PowerBook screen doesn't make that weird border on the shadows even more visible than it normally is.

Simply hide the dock and you hide the bug as well.

Or you could use Silk/TinkerTool and change the system fonts to an all-capitalised one. Like the Star Trekky fonts.

The Dock still uses Lucida Grande even if you change the system fonts.
