Could someone eloborate about Spotlight and it indexing the hard drive.
I got and installed Tiger yesterday and tried out Spotlight-- it worked instantly.
I didn't notice any indexing activity going on though.
Unlike some people i am able to shutdown as well.

How do I know if Spotlight has finish indexing the harddrive? Are there signs to look for? And if the harddrive wasn't fully indexed, will it index my harddrive the next time my computer is on?

Thanks to everyone in advance!

I think it depends on how much data there is on your HD. There is about 70GB on mine, and Spotlight was done after about 20 mins or so. Everything works nice and fast, and as far as I can notice it finds everything everywhere as well.
I don't know how to check if everything had been indexed, sorry.
But when Spotlight is indexing you can't use it, it will give you a message. When its done you wont see anything, just the search window.

the little magnifying glass has a pulsing dot in the corner, when that is not doing anything you're done, from then on, its instantanious for the rest of the drive, if you do a major install with lots to check it will do them as it installs, its quite well done.

Can anyone explain HOW to force Spotlight to index a drive...?

I have 4 external hard drives... one of them is a Backup of my Documents drive. The BACKUP volume got indexed... the actual DOCUMENTS drive did not. When I do spotlight searches... it only finds the backed-up files on that drive... NOT the actual originals on my Documents drive.

How can I TELL Spotlight to index the Documents drive...? I rebooted... I unplugged & replugged the FireWire cable... nothing is making it index.

Any suggestions...?

Thanks.

To see whether Spotlight is indexing, open the Terminal and type the command:

top

If the process "mdimport" or "mds" show activity, then Spotlight is indexing.

Mine is DONE indexing... it just "skipped" my Documents" drive.

Could it possibly be because it is a striped RAID volume via OSX's built-in RAID tools...? It is two 40GB drives striped for speed. (The backup is not) Would THAT prevent Spotlight from being able to index it...?

Please help.

On another note... the "reply" count on this site isn't updating for me and this thread remains "low" on the list... anyone else...?

EDIT: "Nevermind"
