Hey I am picking up Tiger later today and was wondering what the difference is between the two types of install. I sort of want to just wipe my hard drive and do a complete reinstall. A couple of questions make me wonder about that though which is why I may just install over Panther.

1. I have the last powerbook that can boot into OS9 which I do have to do every once and a while. I haven't located my OS9 disk in my pile of old cd's yet and would like to keep it. You do have to install 9 before you install X right? Can i just copy the OS9 system folder over?

2. So many damn programs to reinstall and set prefs the way I like and not all of which i can find my installers/serials for ( this is not a problem for most major apps)

I have a G4 tower that has a big enough HD to copy everything to but for some reason am still afraid it will be a bigger pain than it has to be.

What are pro's/con's of either way?

thanks

Archive and install will install a fresh OS on your HD and segregate the old one in a folder at root level. It also keeps most everything else just the way you had it, with the exception of either deleting or disabling Stuffit Expander. So it is as 'clean' as a total re-install without the hassle. Under any OS X there should be no need to wipe the HD unless there is something wrong with it. Just repair permissions and use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directories after the install and all should be well. My archive and installs to Panther and Jaguar went flawlessly on 3 machines.
