Hi everybody

How dumb is this: I made a disk image late last year, encrypted it, and now I can't remember the password!!!

Is my stuff really locked away till the universe ends? Any help is most appreciated

If you have the money to spend on CIA-level de-encryption level services, you can probably get into it.

which program did you use to encrypt it?

some programs (like FileVault) have two passwords you can use to decrypt: one is the password you specified during encryption, the other is the "super admin" password associated with the product that you encrypted with.

let me know which program you used to encrypt.

nevermind, stupid question from me.
I created a disk image and saw the encryption type used.

It is AES-128 bit, and it is actually quite strong, to the pont that I strongly doubt you can retrieve the data, UNLESS you had saved your password in the keychain (and have not cleaned the keychain non reinstalled osx in the meatime) when you gave it the first time.
In that case, you should be able to see it in the "keychain access" application (under utilities).
It will show up as "disk image password", and should be used automatically.

I doubt you have it in there though, otherwise your dmg would open automatically when you click on it. BUT, do you have an old backup of your keychain taken some time after (after!) you created the image file? (like on .mac or in an old backup of your home directory?) perhaps it is in there!

anyway, if you cannot retrieve/guess your password or a keychain that cointains it, you're screwed, sorry.

Thanks for trying to help, andrea

And, thanks, rand, for laughing at my pain (That was some good pr0n Well, thank goodness for the Internet)

I think I may use Tiger's Automator to try various combos of the limited selection of passwords I use
