Heck, 13, gamely tried to spell “girlfriend” for several minutes, asking its origin (English), definition (“a favored female companion or sweetheart”) and for it to be used in a sentence. Bee Master Michael Winchester provided Heck with the sentence: “You will never have a girlfriend,” prompting the boy to break into tears and run off the stage.

Perhaps the beemaster was correct. The kid might be gay.

There is one word I will never spell incorrectly for as long as I live, the word I mispelled in a spelling bee when I was around 12 or 13. I won the spelling bee for the entire fifth grade (about 100 or so other students ) , and I was competing against the six graders for the top prize, but I lost on the word "accidentally" - I spelled it "accidently".

In grade 4 we discovered I really sucked at spelling... still do. The only thing that has helped me, and helped a lot is OS X's built in spell checker. Makes me look a lot smarter .

Seriously I used to not be able to spell simple words like polution... holy frick I still can't spell it... AHHH!

Yeah, my girlfriend is a Linguistics major, and ever since my Powerbook has been in the shop, my spelling has gone downhill. Now I just look ridiculously stupid when I talk to her on aim, well... more than usual at least. When I was on OS X I got away with making her think I could actually spell.

Unfortunately, your extreme use of ellipses makes you seem like a twittering flutterhead instead...

(By the way, how on earth do I type a backslash on a Mac (Danish keyboard)? I've gone through pretty much every combination I've been able to find, and I cannot find the friggin' thing!

The thing is, the kid probably will never have one. Poor guy. Maybe he should stick to spell checking in built into his computer.

In other spelling bee related news, I was just watching the ABC world news tonight and when they were introducing the spelling bee story they used a picture of the dictionary dashboard widget.

When I was in fifth grade, I made it to the the last round of the regional level. They got me on the word "granophyre".

I probably would have been eliminated a round earlier, because I'd misunderstood the study list and only studied words for the first round, but by blind luck I got the word "mimeograph". I'd just been reading Dear Mr. Henshaw, which makes quite a point about how that word is spelled, so I was able to get past that one. I'd never even heard of granophyre, though -apparently it's a type of rock- and so that word was the end for me.

Anyway, this joke isn't funny.

I went out once on secretary. It was second grade though. Never ever have I spelled it wrong since.

Sad thing to have happen, maybe it was just a brain freeze.

You misunderstand. The experience was only SECOND GRADE.
I am still not sure what "going out on secretary" means ?

It means he was in a spelling bee, and got the word "secretary" wrong, leading to his elimination.

He could have said it, but it was a whole lot more funny not saying it and having all these silly posts about it.

Still, I feel bad for the kid. Thats going to haunt him forever.

Nevertheless, it isn't OK. Some of these kids do have very genuine social problems because of disorders which they suffer. Moreover, you shouldn't make fun of a disabled person or another race.

A cursory search suggests you have long been ready to preach to a real congregation. Really. Trust me on this. You are waaaaay overdue to get preachy up close and personal with some deserving sinners from down under. How long do you think you'll have to wait before they give you your own flock? At least Ralph de Bricassart had some charm and subtlety about him.

Everyone who makes fun of the disabled or someone of another race or belief already KNOWS it's wrong. CLUE: That's why we make fun of those people. It makes us feel good. It's FUNNY because it's wicked fun because we can't do it in real life. Kinda like why people like scary movies.

undotwa: The killing that the monsters do in horror films is not good for the people who are killed. Moreover, you shouldn't kill people like they do in the films.

Duh.
