Hi,
i've been pretty busy lately trying to write a small haxie and i thought that before releasing it to the public (vt and mu) it would be a good idea to put it here first !
So here is the result of my work: Slider 1.0 (Tiger Only)
A preview video of Slider in action: QT video
Now, what is Slider ?
if you had previously used Quicksilver (the launcher) you already now what it is:
it adds a (cool) sliding + fading effect when opening or closing windows and panels in any cocoa application.
It's difficult to describe, but i find it adds a nice touch to the "feel" of MacOS X and it's totally unobtrusive ! I couldn't live without it now :-)
That was the good part, it's still a work-in-progress, and you may experience difficulty and crashes with some apps (i had crashes when quitting iPhoto and Newsfire). But since it only applies to Cocoa, you don't have to worry of any problem with the Finder !
So, download it, test it, tell me what you think, and post feedback !

You can barely notice it on the default settings, but when you slow it down its pretty funky. I haven't had any crashing apps yet either.

it's because it depends on your processor's speed. MacOS's window manager will automatically skip frames when the CPU is overloaded (which is common when launching an app for example)

Amazing! I wanted something like this just for pure eye-candy. I love it when people sneak it to my brain and do things I secretly desire.
Thank you for your hard-work!

I think my 1.33ghz Powerbook can handle this small window animation...

it's not so simple. First of all, the WM doesn't wait for a CPU hog to skip frames (and you also have to know that windows operations have a very low process priority). Then, it's a quite intensive operation, there's a movement with transparency (which is decreasing/increasing during the animation).
The fact that frames are skipped is a guarantee that Slider will never slow down your computer, even on big windows.

WOW! Is there any other effects that can be achieved this way? Can it be made to work with other non Cocoa Apps?
How easy would it be for you to incorporate more effects into this... maybe a swirl effect or other effects. Also, can you assign different actions for the effect to perform on... say minimizing windows or something?
This could be the start of some very cool plugins!

Is it possible to include an option for just fade out with no slide? I think it would be cool if windows faded in and out like menus.

Yeah I totally agree. This app is great, but it would nice to have a "fade only" option. If that's impossible, my only complaint would be that I wish certain things didn't slide into view... like in Safari when it tries to complete the address you're typing, the box slides in. I don't know if it's possible to have control over one aspect and not the other because this stuff goes over my head.
All in all, great little haxie, and thanks.

Hi there !
I have updated Slider.
You can now enable/disable the opening and closing animations which are adjustable independently. You can also select between a Up->Down and a Left->Right Animation.
There is a small bug with the left->right animation: some maximized windows are shifted to the left when opening (it happens with safari's windows for instance). It's random, and i suspect that the bug is not in slider itself, rather in cocoa :-)
Download Slider
To install, start by removing the current version located in ~/Library/Application Enhancers/

Very awesome! This is just one of those cool little haxies that really does a lot for the interface. Is there any way to get the Slide Width to 0px?

What does the slide width do, exactly?

The 0 pixels slide would be nice, to make it fade in-out like power windows.

I made it 0 by editing the org.chatelp.slider.plist in ~/Library/Preferences. Works fine.

How easy is it to make one of these nifty .ape mods? I would love to experiment with these kinds of things.
You know what would be cool? It would be neat to have a tutorial on how to make ape plugins or an app that you can easily create an ape plugin from.

There are two sample projects in the APE SDK. One of them is Metallifilllililllillizer.

Hi !
new v1.1 of Slider is available to download. It fixes a bug when panels wouldn't appear after turning off the opening animation.

Firstly, very nice job on this little ape. I love how it only works when it has the CPU, so nothing else slows down noticeably.
I have one visual problem to report that would be nice to have fixed: Tool tips try to use the effect on their first appearance. They appear un-themed and completely blank. Every time in the same app after that they seem to work fine without the effect.
Sorry if this has already been posted, I didn't see it when I read the thread.

that's just totally cool!
(soon, someone will develop a haxie to defeat the effect of slider, thus making the mac seem faster)

There's a 1.2 update out.
New in this version, changed slide efect to 0 to now windows can just fade in and out without having to hack the .plist.
Now would be cool if he increased the slide width so it looks like closed windows fly off the screen.

It would be neat if you could have an acceleration/deceleration so windows start fast and slow down as they reach their intended position, then on close they accelerate away.

What are these windows or UFO's?
