I stopped by a local Apple dealer (Vienna, Austria) and wanted to get an iPod shuffle 512 today and they were out of stock. The dealer told me that he cannot order them right now and speculated that something new is in the pipeline. Anyone else had similar experiences? (Or maybe the guy just wanted to get rid of his 1gb shuffles... )

I mean, there are rumors about 2 and 4gb shuffles flying around and lots of discussion whether that would make sense (without a screen that is)...

I'd guess an update at this point is unlikely. Shuffle's have only been out for 5+ months, and this point the entire iPod line is so interdependent on itself that pretty much the whole line would need to be updated at once keep the line selling.

I.E. If 2GB and 4GB shuffles came out it would force the mini's to change capacity or price, which would force the regular ipods to change capacity/price which would force the photo iPods to change capacity/price, etc etc etc. I'm sure this will happen at some point, but I think the entire line is sitting pretty for at least the next few months.

I think that the update (if there is one) would be to update the 512 MB to 1 GB and 1 GB to 2 GB. That makes more sense (IMO) because then they wouldn't have to update the whole line of iPods and all.
Apparently, I'm a sig violator. I feel honored. Oops.

It might just be your supplier. I see them everywhere in my town, even being sold at the 7-11s.

It's the same over here, it was just the one shop that ran out of them. But then again, it's one of the more competent apple shops in town. That made me wonder...
Guess I'll just drop by another store and grab one these days.

Huh? Now it seems as if every apple store in town ran out of 512mb shuffles. Second store told me that they can't order them any more. Now what should I make of this? Guy in other store said something new is coming in 1-2 weeks. Guess I'll wait some more and go running with my ipod photo in my palm for the next couple of days...

Now, the whole thing might make sense in light of this bit of news (stumbled across it thanks to ManofSteel): Upcoming Apple event

The bastard wanted to sell you a 1GB for the old price (now reduced to 129 from today).
I'm-a trying to wonder, wonder, wonder why you, wonder, wonder why you act so.
