How much difference am I going to see going from a 1.25GHz 15" PB with 512MB RAM to a 14" 1.42GHz iBook with 1GB RAM?

I'm considering doing this.

Why?

The PB has the much better (and higher rez) screen, and it's lighter too. Just add memory to the 15" PowerBook. The overall speed difference will not be significant after you add the memory, especially considering the PowerBook has the Radeon 9600 64 MB, which is better than the iBook's 9550 32 MB.

And I say this as someone who migrated from a 15" PowerBook 1 GHz (Ti) to a 12" iBook 1.33.

I'm about to have my second hard drive crash and burn on me. I'm thinking it's from how much my wife and I travel with it, move around the house with it, etc. It is my impression that iBooks are more mobile and more forgiving when it comes to movement.

I doubt it.

P.S. My TiBook is 3 years old, and still runs fine. My iBook G3 started to die just after warranty ran out, because of the logic board issue.

The new iBooks are amazing deals. You're definitely gaining...not losing. Do it!

If you're going to get an iBook, I think the 12" is a better value.

the 12 inch also has more dpi than the 14 inch, due to the same screen resolution. Everything's sharper!

14" iBook is kind of pointless, IMO.
