I found out this morning that our fellow member Eug (or Eug wanker) is in hospital for the past couple days.

He broke 3-4 ribs mountain biking and collapsed the right lung. He has this big gross tube coming out the side of his chest (I assume to drain his lung). Luckily he was wearing a helmet which is broken in half.

Anyway, he might get out of hospital this week, in the mean time everyone wish him a quick recovery.

And kids, this shows why wearing a helmet is a good idea.

Someone take a Powerbook to his hospital room for God's sake. Imagine the withdrawl!

Oh man... 3-4 Ribs and a tube sticking out of his side... I cracked a single rib once, and it hurt a lot. Much more than the other bones I've broken (Wrist twice, now pinned. Ankle twice. Elbow once) He now lives in fear of sneezing.

Get well soon Eug. I'm looking forward reading the whole sorry tale.

Ouch.

I remember breaking a rib or two when I fell skiing. On top of that I had a cold. Very painful to cough! Very painful to do anything. Had to sleep in an easy chair.

Speedy recovery, Eug.

Ugh, that sucks big time. Best wishes + a speedy recovery to the poor Wanker.

Btw, IIRC from what the wife told me (RRT), the tube is actually blowing air into his lungs to "inflate" it/keep it from collapsing again. Not that it matters much - it's gross either way.

Bicycle mishap BAD. Bicycle helmet GOOD! Chest tube a pain but necessary (and temporary).

Thanks for the info, S.I.C.

Get better fast, Eug!

The tube allows the lung to reinflate and at the same time push out any air that is trapped between the lung and the inside of the plureal cavity. Unlike a simple wound drain, a chest tube typically goes through a "trap" similar to the one in a sink drain which makes it basically a one-way passage out. As the lung reinflates and expands, it helps seal the inside of the cavity by pressing against it. At some point a chest tube usually just "stops" and the physician makes the determination whether that's because of a problem (rare) or because the lung is fully inflated, in which case it can be removed. So the tube is passing air, but outward, so that the pneumothorax (air bubble inside the chest cavity) is reduced and eliminated, speeding the repair of the wound and enabling the lung to work effectively.

Somehow that sounds even worse.

*shudder*

I figured I had gotten that wrong somewhere - better close this window before the wife walks past the screen, sees what I typed in her name and throws me a beating ...

I punctured my right lung when I was 18. A little painful but mostly because my back was hurting after a couple of days. BTW it took 10 days to get the lung up to a point to disconnect the tube. Get well Eug! Keep posting your mac news soon!
I'm-a trying to wonder, wonder, wonder why you, wonder, wonder why you act so.

Just remind Eug that as a Pathologist, his services won't be needed unless the alive people docs mess it up, so just sit back, relax, and enjoy the fact that it is now someone else's responsibility to wipe his ass for a while.

I wish him a speedy recovery. I've done the broken ribs/punctured lung routine, and it's no fun. For his sake, I hope he's a fast healer.
