I use iTunes. Then send to my Nokia 6630 via bluetooth.

There are ways to do it without BT, but all are a little more complicated. Card reader (if your phone has a memory card), uploading a ringtone to a wap site and downloading it that way, etc.

I find people who have music for their phone very rude.

Hah! Like 95% of all ringtones isn't music? EVERYONE IS RUDE

(For the record mine is mostly on vibrate and my ringtone is an old-telephone style ring that starts low and increases in volume).

Here's what I do:

1. Open an audio track on a CD with Audacity (the tracks show up as AIFF files, which Audacity can open)

2. Grab the portion that I want, trim it to that portion, save as an AIFF on the hard drive.

3. Import the resulting AIFF into iTunes.

4. Convert the AIFF to a 64 Kbps mono MP3 file using iTunes (as most cell phones don't have stereo speakers)

5. Send the resulting MP3 file to the phone via Bluetooth. Voilà!

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Same procedure here (you have an SE phone as well, I assume?). The next turd whose cell phone plays "Für Elise", "Beethoven's 9th" or anything from Britney Spears will have his phone force-fed to him.

Weirdly enough though, my (non-representative) experience is that Europeans seem a lot worse in terms of choosing retarded ringtones and generally inconsiderate behavior when it comes to cell phones. Anyone make similar observations?

I once heard a phone that sounded like someone screaming in agony in a room down the hall.

I think I have something that will solve your problems.
http://www.c21tones.com

C21Tones has original and free ringtones for WAP push (SMS) delivery and Bluetooth download.

You can also UPLOAD any MIDI or MP3 file and the system sends it to your phone for you for free. (Any country, any network (probably), any tone). If you want something that isn't there, you could try submitting it, but it needs to be an original composition. Mashups might be cool though!

Also, it converts the file into the best ringtone for your phone (over 400 supported phones).

Why / How / Who?
It's an arts project designed to foster creativity and get people creating alternative mobile contnet. Feel free to use it to share your compositions and to get some new free ringtones.

Yes, I observed the same thing. But the U.S. is catching up. (Remember, most of our phones are 1-2 generations behind yours, so you got the whole ringtone thing a couple of years before us.)

How about you just use a normal ****ing ringer so everyone doesn't think 'duechebag alert' whenever your phone rings.....

Because some of us like to be unique, and just piss certain people, like you, off.

Anyways, what does a "normail ****ing ringer" sound like? Cell phones come with such stupid ring tones, so why not spice it up a little?

Well some people are going for something a little less annoying then the lame ass preset ringers on cell phones today.

Im for originality.. Although i am not a huge fan of most of the music that people choose as ring tones.

My phone can sound like a real phone, like with a bell... like the 'brrring. brrrriiing" sound. It's great. It sounds like >gasp< a phone!!!!

That's because musical ringers are annoying.

That brrring brrrriiing sound is very annoying. I'd rather hear the Smurfs soundtrack, or a vocal of somone saying "brrring brrrriiing."
