Is there a software available that will let me reduce the size of a photo? I was trying to post a photo on an online journal type site and apparently my photo size was too big. They recommended downloading IrfanView but it seems that this program isnt compatible with a Mac.... ???.....

Any suggestions what I can use? Can I do this on iPhoto without ruining my pictures? Please help. Thanks in advance.

I created a finder plugin for this task. When you right click on a photo or photos and select the plug-in it will create a folder on your desktop called scaled then ask you what size you want the photos. It will then copy the images to the new folder and resize them.

Check the new post at the bottom for an update

if you have 10.4, here's a link to an automator action that might do the trick:

MacBook Pro | 2.16 ghz core2duo | 2gb ram | superdrive | airport extreme
iBook G4 | 1.2ghz | 768mb ram | combodrive | airport extreme
iPhone 3GS | 32 GB | Jailbreak, or no Jailbreak

Try Dropic! My wife needed this functionality without a lot of bells and whistles, and Dropic! did exactly what she needed. Free too.

On the Mac, holding down the control key while clicking the left (or only) mouse button is equivalent to right-clicking with a multi-button mouse.

Do you have a Mighty Mouse? If so, you can configure it to act as a multi-button mouse. Try opening System Preferences and then selecting "Keyboard and Mouse", and look there.

If you're accustomed to using multi-button mice on other systems (like Windows), you'd be well-advised to pick up a multi-button mouse for your Mac. Just about any standard USB mouse will work fine.

thanks neilw & wataru. that was very helpful.

neilw -- i used to be a pc user and was used to the multi button mouse for a while, however when i switched to the mac, i love that theres only one button. it makes life easier. i dont think i will be switching to a multibutton mouse anytime soon. the tip on the ctrl+click is awesome though...... still gives me the power of multi button without the extra clutter.

Dropic.sit is the program, .txt is a brief manual, and .screenshot is a screenshot of it in action. The latter two are very small, so why not download all three and dump the text and screenshot if you don't want them.

You can also do this with mail and iPhoto. Select a picture in iPhoto. Click email. Select size. Drag the new file to a folder or wherever you want it.

Since I still get hits from my post above, I thought I would setup a page dedicated to the Automaor image actions I posted about. There are a total of three, one to rotate images, one to resize, and one to convert the images into a different image type.

Three handy Automator actions

Apple photo software - Mac picture editor, photo editor, image editor, graphics conversion

The JPEG save dialog, the folder browser (with batch processing), and AppleScript support make it tops for this sort of thing.

Graphic Converter can resize images, and so can ToyViewer. ToyViewer is free.
