When you open "internet connect" what is VPN? What does it stand for? What are a VPN's functions? I have seen it forever and I have wondered this entire time what it is and finally I am asking. And there no one better to ask than the people on here. Someone always has answers for me.
Thanks

I use one a fair bit. I think the official meaning is "virtual private network"- basically, it allows your computer to securely login to a "private network" - for example, your business network. Then, you can perform tasks, and access data usually only accessable to those within the company network. Your computer acts as if it is behind the corporate firewall.

I wondered the same thing. When I first tried it a little black icon appeared on the top right of the screen. It never goes away. Anyone know how to get rid of the icon 'coz is wasn't there before and I'll never use it?

Hold down the command (apple) key, click on it, drag it out of the dock.

*poof* it's gone.

Does anyone know whether it uses TCP or UDP or does that depend on where you are connecting to? Right now I use a cisco vpn app, but I hate it more than anything and would rather use a built in service.

I hear ya. I need to use the Cisco VPN client and I would mutch rather use the built in one. What do I need to do this?

It's supposed to be possible, as of 10.4.6. There are a number of settings you need, and perhaps the shared secret, which often IT folk are very hesitant to give up. You'd really need to work with the folks who run the concentrator on it... it's not trivial to set up especially when we're guessing from our end.
