"10000 Days"
I haven't been this excited for a new album since Lateralus (or maybe Hail To the Thief). And then hopefully catch them in concert!
Can't Wait!

I saw this one pop up as a preorder for me on Amazon based on my prior purchases. I e-mailed the release date and album title to a friend and fellow Tool fan. He remarked that it felt like it's been 10,000 days since they last put out an album!

We're definitely looking forward to it. I remember reading the news reports in 2004 about the "2005 album". Of course they've been completely worth the wait up until this point, so I don't mind the delay.

I used to like Tool, now I find them long-winded and boring.

…and Maynard is a pretentious douche-bag.

I've been looking forward to the new Tool release for quite a while. But something about the album and track titles has me afraid that it's gonna be a bit like eMOTIVe, which was really not a strong release.

New Tool, eh? I haven't listened to Forty Six & 2 in a while now. I still remember picking up Lateralus when it came out.

When I'm in the mood, Tool make me very, very happy. Odd how that works.

At the moment, however, my eardrums are disintegrating under the crushing power that is Boris' Pink. Ahhhhhhh.

10,000 days won't be anything like eMotive or aMotion, nor will it sound anything like Maynard's other band A Perfect Circle. All press indicates that it will be much more angst driven and visceral than Lateralus, which should come as comforting to fans of older Tool material.

Keep in mind, those albums were made during a time when people HAD the right the choose. Apparently, not that I buy into the hype...

Maynard has given up on humanity choosing the 'right' way for itself and instead wants to showcase his disgust and anger towards everything.

Not too sure what that means exactly, but it should make for a GREAT album. Vicarious will be on radio stations in the next few days.

So, you're saying that Undertow, Salival, Ænima, etc.. all sucked?

I hope that's true. If it is I'll be very happy.

As much as I think Lateralus was a brilliant piece of work, I do, on the whole, prefer the grittier sound of Undertow.

Regardless, I'm sure I'll have my copy in hand by noon of the 2nd.

I think I'm gonna have to dust off the credit card and download this on iTunes when it's released.

Download? Bah.

Tool's albums, Lateralus especially, are as much about the music as they are about the artwork contained in the booklets.

Get the hard copy. You'll be happy you did.

Edit: And for whatever reason, Tool still isn't available from iTunes.

I'm hoping it'll be more of a progression of complexity like the previous releases have shown. If you're on ANY kind of drug, Tool is the music to listen to

That said, I want more Lateralus-ly mind-blowing tribalness, and less Opiate-sounding in-your-face rock break beats, which is pretty much how Tool has been moving anyway.

Making your own adjectives is fun. Until May 2nd, however, I'm into Opeth.

They ceased to be interesting to me after Aenima.

Thanks but no.

I like my music significantly more violent and energetic than that droning crap Tool had become.

Maybe I'll give the new album a chance but I have little confidence.

Something I don't quite understand is why people want a band to return to a sound/style they left behind. Let's see a new direction for Tool! They will always be Tool, but I want to see them create new art, not imitate art that they had created 10 years ago. Everything they've done has been awesome, but once you start trying to go back you end up with crap like St. Anger. I think Tool's song writing has gotten better with every album. Hopefully they will continue.

Songwriting has definitely gotten better, and Danny Carey has certainly become more creative on the drums. If this continues with their new album, I'll be one cappy hamper.

My brother loaned me Lateralus once, I listened to it, but didn't get what all the fuss was about. It all seemed very dull and boring stuff, but yeah I agree the box artwork was good.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

BTW, the meaning of 10,000 Days is quite surprising. But it also reveals something I already expected about Maynard.

No, I don't mean he's spent 10,000 Days in the closet.

Tool never was and never will be in the iTMS.

Just picked it up at Best Buy. Gonna import at lossless and give it a listen a couple times through.

BTW, when importing, you may want to join these tracks:
- Wings For Marie (Part 1) --> 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)
- Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman) --> Rosetta Stoned
- Intension --> Right In Two

These are the songs on the album that "blend" together, so just doing a normal import gives slight pauses between the tracks.

Just picked it up as well. Of course the packaging is top notch. Not surprised here, they have been known to do some cool stuff with their packaging.

I've listened to the album while at work so I haven't been able to give it the attention it deserves. Even so, I'm really diggin it. As with other Tool albums, I suspect the more I listen to it the richer it will become. I can't wait to get home and give this a proper listen.

When you first insert the CD, and iTunes is showing the track names, click Advanced -> Join CD Tracks. The only caveat is that these actually become a single song in your Library, so finding where the previous track ends and the next one starts is kind of a hit and miss.

Another technique is to just import them regularly and then set the crossfade to 1 second in iTunes, but then you still get a little dip in volume as the track changes.

For me, I joined the tracks since I rarely listen to just /one/ Tool song at a time. I'll pop the CD into my car or pull up iTunes and just start on the first track of an album, letting it play all the way through.

I find their music extremely bland (too many songs sound the same) with too many "pauses" that they like to throw in their music. Gets annoying.

Not as annoying as rap, which sounds like a bloody broken record.

They are awesome in concert. I wish they'd do more concerts in So.Cal.
Anyway, I couldn't help but think that this album is like a "cross" between Lateralus and Aenima. It doesn't feel like a 1.2 hour long album either. Haven't paid much attention to the lyrics yet, but I'm totally enjoying the music already (being a big Tool fan and all..). Still kinda early to rate this album.

What do you guys think?

The main reason I found Lateralus so appealing was because of the vague yet powerful lyrics. In a certain mood the songs hold completely different meanings. Schism is about watching something fall apart. Parabol/a is about the beauty of finding inner peace in something/someone you love. Lateralus is about pushing yourself to the limit at something. All these are just a blueprint for what the song will mean to you while you are going through different situations.

However the songs on 10,000 Days are always going to mean what they already mean because the lyrics paint the entire picture for you.

10,000 Days can certainly hold up to the rest of Tool's catalogue, but Lateralus is in a class all it's own.

Jambi is one of the finest tracks Tool has ever created.

So far my favorite is Rosetta Stoned, I am very pleased with the album and It's amazing how much you pick up on the second even fourth listen that you havn't heard on the first one. Tool is amazing when it comes to layering the music so you can find new meaning and even guitar riffs that you didn't even know were there.

I'm going to quote someone from another forum just because I cannot explain it any better than this.

Rosetta Stoned is sonically structured as a collection of Tool's signature stylistic elements and themes that echo throughout the bands body of work. What at first appears like a cut and paste collection of recognizable riffs and rhythms culled from other Tool songs morphs into its own fleshy body by track's end, until you're left with the feeling that this latter song has provided the origins for the other tracks that preceeded it. The lyrical sense that the song itself is a story told by a deeply disturbed indidvdual who believed he was chosen to convey important meaning, only to forget what the meaning was, and ends up shitting the bed at the end of the story, augments the confusion of the juxtaposition of muscial themes. Unlike the real rosetta stone, this Roseta Stoned is more of an incomprehesible epitaph inscribed upon the tombstone of a damaged prophet, concealing the corpse forever.

Get a pair of high-end speakers and you'll get alot more out of their music (when you can hear everything involved). It's not for everybody as an everyday listen, but once in awhile it's fun to 'crank it up to 11.'

So true. Tool's not "easy listening".

I just found out I had the wrong drivers installed for my sound card yesterday (on my PC, of course), and updated to the right ones, and this album sounds 200% better.

Why I was getting sound in the first place, I have no idea.

My fav so far would totally have to be Vicarious. The Pot is also big.
