I have a hoover fold away vac now, it is pretty crappy. Every time I use it the filter clogs and it's a pain to clean it. I want a decent vac that is under $200 if possible. Any suggestions?

Sometimes it's just worth it. Besides you didn't set a hard $200 limit, you said "if possible."
Oh and, yes, the Dyson "Animal" is worth the hype.

No recommendation on Make/model... but I'd say go canister vac. This may be old school, but they're usually better...... I've had a average Sears vac since 1995 when I bought my first house. This was after I got the top of the line upright vac... I brought it back after a week.. and the lady said "yea, if you want good quality, go canister".
Of course, things may have changed so much since then that I have no clue what I'm talking about anymore.
I will say this however, nothing beats a central vacuming system. Or you can alwyas try those that's used to clean corporate offices... the ones you strap to your back

As much as I hate to say "spend lots of money and get the good one"
The Dyson Animal is a really ridiculously good vacuum. :-\
But as always, google/froogle it.
Dyson Animal can be had for $250+shipping according to froogle.
and in case the Animal isn't for you...

Dyson makes some great vacuums, easy to clean as well, no bags. Maybe not for the tech savvy my dad still refuses to use his, but when Im home I always jump at the chance to use ours.

I need to use vacuums a lot due to being ashtmatic / alergical to everything guyā¦ and having a freaking huge house just do it worse. I have spent so much money on vacuums, like an expensive italian polti vaporetto lecoaspira 910 vacuum, it is a pain to use, heavy like a truck and you have to clean it everytime you use it.
So I ended buying a dyson, they are just awesome, I can not see myself getting another vacuum brand. The service towards theirs clients is top notch. I wish I needed a new one, I would like to get 'the ball'.
How a guy -James Dyson- can do such beautiful vacuum systems amazes me.

Go with a Roomba. They are truly the greatest things ever. The only downsides are the small dustbin, ~2 hour battery power, and the tendency to not get along with stray wires. If you have a large house then you might want multiples or multiple batteries. But you could also change your vacuum routine to do a section of the house daily. They pick up everything and leave nice patterns in the carpet, like crop circles.

I have had my Dyson Animal for over 3 years and the only thing wrong with it is that I need to wipe it down to reduce the amount of dust that sticks to it. Oh, and one of the attachments has lost its "hair collector" strip. The Animal will overfill itself (trust me on this; I have three dogs whose coats are only sketchily held in place ). It will pull hair and dust out of (not just OFF of) high quality carpet, even after its dust container is full and even overfill. It's also very light and easy to move.
I wish I got a commission from Dyson; I've sold four other people on this machine.

Dyson: "The Ball". Simply -amazing- how much dirt/hair/whatever it gets off the floor and out of the carpet. The only downside is that it's always kind of disgusting to see how much dirt was in the house.

Consumer Reports has the Kenmore Progressive with Direct Drive 35922 ($300) as their best ranked. For under $200 the Eureka Boss Smart Vac Ultra 4870 ($140) and Hoover WindTunnel Bagless U5753-90 ($160) were not far behind.
BTW the Dyson Animal is their 20th ranked vacuum.

I'm curious as to what they had to say about the Dyson.

"A very good bagless vac, but has confusing controls. Hose longer than most. Noisy. Hard to push and pull. No headlamp."

I have a Dyson DC04. It is very noisy when upright but the tools are nice. It is quite heavy but the fancier/newer one seem even heavier. I keep mini in the Living room since I have very little cupboard space.
It looks great...

$80 vacuum is just as good as a $400 one according to Consumer Reports.

The day Microsoft will make something that doesn't suck is the day they start making vacuum cleaners
"Nothing sucks like an Electrolux", or so I hear...
Seriously, I've had very very good experience with the Kirby. It is as good as it is noisy and it is built like a tank.

Yeah. I figured they're a bit beyond the requested budget of the OP, so didn't bother.
Did you try the Kirby attachment which massages your head? Seriously, mine's got one specifically for that. So the "little lady" can give herself some relaxation after a hard morning vacuuming. The "how to use the attachments" (including massage tool) video is hilarious.

Even though obvious, it still produced a big grin.
