Aren't scare tactics great? This was from McAfee's Breaking Advisory section.
May 4, 2006. McAfee AVERT Labs has released a white paper detailing research that Apple Operating Systems are becoming a bigger target for malware. A 228 percent increase has been seen in vulnerability discovery on Mac OS from 2003-2005. This is compared with Microsoft operating systems that only saw a 73 percent increase in the same period. The report sheds light on the changing notion that the Apple operating system itself is no longer a form of security by obscurity.
Whitepaper that it talks about : http://download.nai.com/products/mca...alwaresEye.pdf
The whitepaper even says there were 18 new Mac viruses in 1998. I don't recall that ever happening. It also says 5 viruses were found between 2000 and 2003 also. I call BS on McAfee.

Percentages are often used instead of hard numbers for shock value.
Increase 100 vulnerabilities 228% and you've got 228 new vulnerabilities for a total of 338.
Increase 1000 vulnerabilities 73% and you've got 730 new vulnerabilities for a total of 1730.
So which would be more secure ?

It's the end of the world. Or not?
The first line of the article really caught my attention:

Oh no! Not the white paper! Say it isn't so!

I was under the impression that white paper was a fancy term for toilet paper.

Apples are more likely to catch fire now too - better buy some insurance.

I honestly don't know what's worse: McAffee's scare tactics, or this mind-bogglingly ill-informed idea among the Mac community at large that they're invincible.

You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

The mind-bogglingly ill-informed idea that Macs are invincible is the worse of the two, IMHO.
