Luxembourg - May 8, 2006

Houdah Software s. à r. l. is excited to announce the immediate
availability of HoudahSpot 1.0.

During the 3 week public beta phase we were lucky to receive lots of
mails from our customers. We are grateful for every bit of praise and
criticism received. Indeed the many suggestions and requests helped
shape the 1.0 release.

HoudahSpot is a file search tool based on Apple's Spotlight
technology. It enables users to quickly create and store powerful search
queries.
HoudahSpot has been designed from the ground up with ease of use and
convenience in mind. We feel it is not the user who needs to be
educated, but the software that should be made to the user's need.

HoudahSpot leverages Apple's powerful and fast Spotlight engine. It
improves in many ways over the default interface in Mac OS X 10.4: -
Ability to express complex queries
- Flexible browsing of results
- It does not waste this engine's horsepower to run searches before the
user is done entering criteria
- User definable templates
- Hot key access to saved searches: Recent Documents, Applications, ...

HoudahSpot is a Universal Binary application. It requires a Macintosh
running Mac OS X 10.4.5 or later with Spotlight enabled.

A 30-day full-featured demo version is available for download at
http://www.houdah.com/houdahSpot

A license may be purchased from our web site. The single-user license is
priced at $19.95 (plus VAT where applicable).
SPECIAL OFFER! We would like to extend our thanks to our early
adopters. Thus purchases made before May 15, 2006 are eligible for a $5
discount.

Seems like a good idea, there just seems to be something lacking. I'm not on my Mac right now so I can't let you know what that is.

But for me, it doesn't really look like it provides any benefit over Spotlight since 100% of the time Spotlight is more than enough to find "that lost document" I need. I can see a potential for photographers and music nuts who like to add metadata and whatnot, but I've always searched by filename.

But, good luck.

Trouble is that Spotlight make it hard to search by file name only. Spotlight searches by name and contents. Thus it wastes your time doing searches that produce too many results for you to browse through.

You can also search by filename in the Finder.

For searching by filename, I use quicksilver. For when I'm not sure what the filename is, I use spotlight. It's a nice simpatico relationship those 2 have got for me.
