I plan on buying a MacBook in the next month or two ...
Is there any reason I should wait longer to do this?
I though I heard something about a new chip coming down the line ....
Have all the manufacturing bugs been worked out?
Thanks for any info .......

Core 2 Duo, Intel's 20-30% faster mobile chip, drops in late August. It's a drop-in replacement for Core Duo, so Apple could have new revisions out very quickly.

if your planning on waiting then wait, theres is a possibility that Apple will release a revision, though I don't think they will so soon.
I debated waiting myself, but the macbook currently offers what I needed in a computer so I figured why wait.

According to this rumor the MB will stick with Yonah (Core Duo) till late 2006. It probably won't get upgraded to Merom (Core 2 Duo) till MWSF at the earliest.

Well, I'm gonna be buying a MacBook around the beginning of September (best bday present EVER ^^) and I really doubt that they'll be chip-changing on what is supposed to be the entry-level (yet very advanced) laptop! My interpretation of this is that Apple was trying to meet everyone's wants about having a sub-thousand-dollar Apple laptop, and that it came out in the end that it didn't work out and they had to make the bottom-level one $1,099. So while it may be pointless to get a MacBook in September, right after Leopard is introduced at WWDC, I can't stand ANY more time than I have to with my $\\!++y old IBM ThinkPad, and if I have to BUY a copy of Leopard right after I buy my BlackBook, SO BE IT. .

Leopard will be demonstrated at WWDC. But it likely won't be for sale till MWSF in Jan 2007.

that's a good point... plus, I have read several books on Tiger (being a new Switcher, currently posting from Windblows) so I think it would be great to use the OS I have studied for a month or two before I upgrade... .

If you're willing to wait several months, your new MacBook will include the next version of OSX (10.5 aka "Leopard") and iLife 07, sparing you the expense of paying for upgrades next year.

yes, but as I said in the post above, I have read about Tiger a lot, and not only that but as soon as I can get rid of my crappy Windows PC to get a Mac, I'll do it... maybe I could count the Leopard/iLife '07 as a late Christmas present... *crosses off 60 gig iPod and writes down 30 gig* I'm always finding ways to con my parents for money... usually doesn't work

yeah, I'm really excited... I'm having some trouble with my current laptop, but I don't really want to hint toward springing to get a MacBook now, because if I did that, I would have to put the MacBook in the crappy bag I have... I'm waiting till I can get the bag and mouse that I want till I get mine... and that day happens to be my birthday... imagine that. .

Geez ... that's too bad ...
I've heard that the MacBook runs really hot and that the new chip would be a lot cooler ...
Are the MacBooks really that hot?
Will this new chip make that much of a difference ...
If it does I would seriously think of holding off even to Jan/07

I don't see how Merom would make the MBs cooler. The heat problem with the MBs is technially the fault of Apple, not the chip, as all [most] other laptops with the same processors are not nearly as hot as the MacBooks.

Bummer .... I now have reservations about getting a new MacBook at all until the heat issue is solved ....

I personally dont think the heat issue will be solved. I think this is what we should expect from now on in terms of heat in Apples portables

I really don't think they're that hot anyway... and personally think of it this way: Apple has been designing laptops with the PowerPC chip for years, and coincidentally the PPC chip is not as hot as the intel chip, basically meaning that Apple will have to get used to doing a little bit of different design for heat effeciency, also meaning that for now it's the standard for portable Macs. But will it be in the future? Only time will tell.

Merom will not run cooler than Yonah. Merom will offer better performance without running hotter than Yonah.

The correct answer is to wait as long as you can... hardware will always change (and a lot faster now thanks to Intel) and IMHO I would wait for the new CPUs to be released but if you need a notebook buy one now.
I needed a new notebook because I hate sitting at a desk and I got a good offer for my Asus V6V so I ditched it. If you can hold out do it... but if you buy in Mid-August/September expect wait times.

Wait for XMAS if you can...but I also think Apple will not refresh the MacBooks with Merom until 2007. They decided to skip Core Solo, but they will need to differentiate the MacBook Pros more. Too many reviews showing MacBook too close to MBPro in performance...IMHO

Your friend may have gotten one of the 'defective' cases. Apple is replacing the cases that become misolored. Take it in to an Apple Store or call Apple.

How annoying though. Apple sure has had a lot of recalls/defects in the past 5 years or so.

Really? My MB just turned pink and has some green dots on the underside. Actually it's now developing a 70s disco ball on the top. And I think a John Travolta silhouette is starting to appear on the screen. Do you think they'll fix that too?
