For some stupid reason, I started wondering how cluttered the average MacNN user's desktop is. Mine is usually fairly open and sorted, but from time to time it needs a bit of a cleanup.
So here's my idea: minimize your open windows, do a screen capture ( without cleaning things up first), and post it on here.
Here's mine...

Not really. Most of the clutter is stuff I've recently dragged out of Web pages and stuff from work on Friday that I haven't gotten around to tossing.

Ok, where did you get that amazing wallpaper. I love it. Heres mine, I try to keep it as organized as possible, I can't wait until I get my 20" iMac so I can get off of this 12" iBook G4 screen.

I would love to take some screen caps of my co-workers and post them here. I've seen people with 200+ items on their desktop. No lie. So many icons that you can't even see the desktops. Icons on top of icons.

It's a picture from one of that girl's photobooks. I downloaded it off noemitm.ca. If you're interested, go to their gallery and do a search for "Yaguchi" and it should come up.

Looks pretty clean to me :
I'm extremely picky about keeping all my stuff tidy and arranged - since I'm a total space case, I used to never able to find things.

Darn it Adam - you've had a little teaser icon on your site about CSSEdit 2 for a LONG time. Do you know how much I'd love to have that be released? Tell MacRabbit to hurry up already!
I'd put up a desktop capture, but I'm afraid it would be boring. It's just a cool photo I found on Flickr, there are no icons, my dock is on auto-hide, etc.

It used to be Dragthing but I didn't like it so I replaced it to hacked version of Overflow. Much cleaner and instant access to second most used apps.
Dave, I know about CSSEdit 2, Jan Van Boghout really need to release it asap. He even missed the deadline for submitting CSSEdit 2 to WWDC

I have 3 or 4 documents plus 5 drive icons on my machine at any given time (at most). Don't like it when its too cluttered. My wife's, on the other hand, has about 15-20, perhaps more, icons on it.
Of course, her real-life desktop is far cleaner than mine, so it all evens out.

My desktop in dual-monitor mode.
I recently came to the realization that all the Mail notifiers, system widgets, etc. just distracted me and kept me from getting work done, so I've gone uber-minimalist.
I hide the Dock, use Menufela to hide the menu bar, and Quicksilver for launching.
The icon in the bottom-left is a VirtueDesktops desktop label & icon; I have separate virtual screens for "Connect", "Write", "Communicate", "Develop", etc.
On the top right is my sole bit of clutter, a text clipping.

I heard and wasn't sure if it's true that if your desktop is a total mess and will cause your mac run slower?

Yes. OS X keeps track of desktop items and if you reach a certain count (Apple will not release this number), OS X will automatically enable all the latent debug code!!

I heard it was 2 if you are running 10.0, 3 for 10.1, 5 for 10.2, and 6 for 10.3 and 10.4. Maybe teh Leopard will bring us into double digits!!!!11one.

I believe every desktop item is actually a small window. So you incur whatever windowserver performance penalities are associated with more windows open (slightly longer to composite stuff over it? more memory taken?)

Never heard of that. Sounds like a load of bull to me.
I haven't noticed any correlation between speed and desktop "clutterness" so far...
Edit: Ok, Google says you're right. Weird. Gotta try it.

Mine'll clutter up for a few weeks, then I lose it and clean the whole thing up. Then it gradually starts to clutter up again. I'm about 1/4 of the way through the cycle, right now:
