just type the first letter that the folder or file begins with. if there is more than one with the same first character you can navigate with the arrow keys.

Ummm...no.

In the Finder you can type the first two or three letters to jump to a file.

The arrow keys select icons above/below/to the right/left of the currently selected icon. The Tab key (or shift-tab) selects the next (or previous) icon, alphabetically.
