I sometimes need to leave my macbook on for a long time so that it can download stuff for me. But it gets HOT. So does it get hurt that way? Thanks.

I'm sure no one here would even think about buying a Macbook if it was so fragile/unreliable that leaving it on overnight would harm it.
Leave it on, isn't that when the scheduled automatic maintenance happens anyway? It's pretty much the same as leaving it on during the day, but dark.

i agree with ducatisteve, you can safely leave your macbook on all night. one thing i would add is to invest in a laptop stand such as this:
Targus Podium CoolPad
you can find it at apple stores. keeps the air circulating underneath the macbook. probably not needed in the strictest sense, but i think some added reassurance.

Just leave it on. I expect any computer I buy to run for 24/7 365 days a year.
