Hey all,

So, I've realized that the only thing stoping me from using Boot Camp/Parallels right now is internal HD space (I have a MacBook).

Would I be able to purchase an external hard drive, install Windows and Linux on that drive (partitioned), and boot off of it? I'm figuring that I wouldn't be able to do this with FireWire (or would I), but I might be able to with USB 2.0.

Am I wrong, or is this possible? It would be great to have my "Windows machine" all on an external.

Thanks guys!

You CANNOT boot Windows from an external drive. This is a limitation/complication that is solely in Windows. During the boot process, Windows takes over USB and firewire ports, and "reenumerates" them, destroying the existing association with connected devices-specifically with USB or firewire drives.

Linux comes in many flavors and there is no doubt a number of distributions that will allow you to boot from an external drive. I cannot name any for you.

A better idea would be for you to get that external drive and MOVE stuff that's crowding your internal hard drive onto it. Thus, with the space you need for Windows freed up, you can use Boot Camp and install Windows on the only kind of drive it will boot from.
