Hey Gang,

My wife's PC got another virus over the weekend. Since my MacBook Pro never seems to have any problems I've nearly got her convinced to come over to the light side. The only question is, can you hook up an extra monitor to a new Intel based iMac 20"? I've read in some places you can not and other that you can. The ability to have a separate screen with her e-mail or web research is a deal breaker for her. Anybody know if this is possible?

Cheers,
David

It has a mini-DVI out, so once you buy the adapter, it should work fine. There's more info in this thread:

My concern is whether the mini DVI will allow you to extend the desktop (i.e. put seperate programs on it) or simply duplicate the iMac screen. I read in a few places that only the "pro" Mac's have the first ability.

All responses are appreciated.

Yes, it let's you span the desktop or mirror it. All Mac's now do both.

None of the iMacs up to the Intel ones supported screen spanning, though all of them did with the Screen Spanning Doctor.

you're absolutely right . . . my first generation isight imac didn't have the ability to screen span, but i used a program called spandoctor to get around that
