The digg.com powers that be decided to delete a story about a HD-DVD code player code being cracked. Since digg.com is supposed to be a "Democracy", the users revolted and have spammed the living crap out of digg with the code. Quite humorous.

For those that missed it, here is a sample as of now:

Looks like digg was either spammed offline, or they took it offline due to it just now.
Edit: the Maintenance page is up now. Here are 2 more screens:

When I read the headline a bit earlier, I laughed before I could even click on the link.

I'm really starting to not like digg. Not because they deleted a story, but because of garbage like this. I guess somewhere along the way I must of grown up. Then I read the comments these jerkasses post to digg stories, and I want to punch people in the face. So maybe I just grew up a little I guess. So yeah, in closing, there's a whole of of diggers out there that can suck it.

On the other hand, it'll be interesting to see how Mr. Rose and crew handle this. If nothing else, it should make for an interesting diggnation episode.

TI,
Read my post about digg from a few days ago. I'm starting to dislike it also. It's a good idea ON PAPER but people abuse it.

OMG!

I don't feel bad for digg so much as I do for Kevin Rose. Kevin Rose is such a good guy, it sucks that some people might have ended the life of digg.

Here's Kevin Rose's reply to all of this:

"Today was an insane day. And as the founder of Digg, I just wanted to post my thoughts…

In building and shaping the site I’ve always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We’ve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.

But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.

Digg on,

Kevin"

I wonder when the MPAA is going to give up. The hex code is out of the bag, and they're just provoking geeks further with their heavy-handed use of the DMCA.

This is really turning me off to Digg. After a few, I think everyone got the point. I can go to CNN.com without having to wade through all this.

There are a lot more important things than the HD-DVD key. It's not like Digg is single handedly keeping it on the internet.

I think this is just lame and childish. It's just unnecessary and more like diggers kill digg instead.

These attempts to stop sites that mention the code are embarrassing. You'd think technology companies would realize the futility of fighting the Internet, but apparently it's going to take a few more rounds before it sinks in.

I thought you never used it anyway?

Digg is good generally especially for a site that has user generated content. This whole retaliation was really pathetic and annoying to watch though.

I sympathize with Kevin Rose. I agree with his action to initially remove the content based on the Cease and Desist. That said, I think the battle has been lost in terms of hex key in question. A Google search returns 322,000 pages (and I'm sure that number is growing rapidly).

I tried to get into Digg a time or two, and I never got attached to it. Eventually, the only time I visited was when someone posted a link to it in these forums. I guess I never understood the allure.

The explanation is rather easy. Jawbone shares the sentiment:
