I just bought a 250 Gb Seagate FreeAgent external harddrive and am unable to erase the disk as suggested before copying any files to it.
When I go Disk Utility> Erase> and then select FreeAgent Drive on the left, the Volume Format and Name come up in grey, and the "Erase" button is not highlighted (it can't be clicked.) I am running on OS 10.3.9. Even if I weren't to Erase it before using it, when I try dragging disks onto it, a message pops up that reads, 'The item "_____" could not be moved because "FreeAgent Drive cannot be modified.' Can anyone help me?

I don't know how Disk Utility works on 10.3.9, but it seems that either you need to switch what's highlighted (from the intended volume to the unindented volume, or visa versa), or try reformatting the partition. That's house I deleted my external HD.

I think you have to delete the existing partition on the FreeAgent drive. It's probably formatted with NTFS which is a file system Macs don't write.

Hi,
I had a similar problem, recently I found a great tech support site that help with these kind of problems.
They also have free live chat support that you can use.
Here is the page for Seagate HD Support
Good luck
