Jaguar is owned by Ford, Rolls Royce by VW and Mini by BMW. But the essence, and history, of these cars is still uniquely British.

Wolff Olins
Do you want a seizure?
Anyways, I have to admit that I don't mind this logo. I usually dislike how cheesy Olympic logos are: little splatters of paint which show a stick figure doing something gay looking, like prancing or waving.

^^ You're kidding right? What has the underground got to do with the Olympics? Sure it's synonymous with London and London is hosting the Olympics, but apart from that? (Perhaps boredom, delays, dirt, etc?!?)
Also, stylistically you'd be seperating out one of the five united flag colours of the various nations involved, (the rings represent unity of the different nations flag colours) you wouldn't really want to mess around with that...

Olympic Host city's are allowed to use 'Olympic' iconography (Torches, rings, flags etc), City's bidding for future games are not.
(notice how the previous London 2012 logo (which was fine IMHO) didn't include any of these)

JonoMarshal, in case you didn't realise, the olympics is being held in London, hence the London reference.
I would have thought that was quite obvious.

I realise as I live here, but again my point is...
What has the underground got to do with the Olympics?
...not what has London got to do with the Olympics.
I find the underground a fairly depressing, unhealthy, frustrating (delays) and boring place to be. No doubt this will only get worse once the games are on.
Why would you want an identity that links the two together?

And what does a Boomerang and the Sydney opera house (Sydney 2000) have to do with the Olympics.
Its about linking the Olympic theme with something instantly recognisable about the place where the event is being held.
So I win.

If choo-choo trains underground are the most recognizable aspect of London then y'all need to make some changes.

Because to anyone who is NOT from London, the Underground is iconic, even romantic in nature. Aside from the Tower Bridge and Big Ben, the Underground (specifically the red circle with horizontal line) is immediately recognizable to almost anyone. I would argue that a good logo design should include a recognizable feature. Besides, the Olympics isn't for the people of London/UK. It's for the rest of the world. That's why cities try so hard to get the Olympics... so they can say "Hey... Look at us... aren't we a cool city!!"

Even if the "London 2012" said something else, you would still instantly know that that its the logo for the London Olympics. The whole thing is tuned on its head by one blue rectangle, I think that makes for a fantastic logo.

And what does a Boomerang and the Sydney opera house (Sydney 2000) have to do with the Olympics.
Well for me the boomerang suggests movement/fun & also a sense of heritage, the Sydney opera house is arguably one of the most distinctive, successful and famous buildings of the 20th century and gives the identity a modern/proud/creative (performing arts at least) feel.
I don't love the Sydney 2000 identity though, but it is certainly a better execution than the idea of linking the London Underground with London 2012.
The Wolff Olins identity was apparently chosen as they wish to move the public's involvement with the games forward somewhat. I hate the style of the proposed logo, but it's all about new media, interaction, the unknown, youth, process and movement. The idea of creating a digital hub for the games as well as allowing individuals to interact with the Olympics over the coming years and during the event is fairly exciting. (In this way I think the logo does communicate the idea of new media, transformation, etc, just not in the current trendy Web 2.0, glossy, clean lines, back to simplicity, etc. way)
I guess what I'm trying to say is that any proposed identity needs to have some thought behind it aswell as looking stylistically 'cool/appealing', although to be honest in my opinion this...
...fails to succeed on either level.
If that will make you happy, then yes... you win... you go girl..!

It is a "Smile in the mind" moment I agree, but I suggest you pay a visit London during the games and see if a tube ride (expect huge over-crowding, sweltering heat, stench, delays and rude staff) is the best way to start your Olympic memories/experience.
In my opinion, even simple "Smile in the mind" moments need to follow through with the promise they infer, otherwise your initial piece of positive communication will soon turn into a strong negative.

considering that britain gonna be in debt for like forever, i woild have thought that they would have at least a kick ass logo since the actually cost of creating a place for the Olympics is like 1 billion.
I've also just noticed that the stupid thing says 2012, i just thought they were random shape until now....

Aside from the colors, I rather like that one.
I also like how they hid the 2002 in the snowflake.

The colors were meant to represent the southwest (red rock canyon, plains, blue mountains) -- and the sharp corners are native american art-ish.

I think it's a salt crystal, not a snow flake. Which, given the location, makes sense.

It's been updated to reflect the public's feeling to it....
I'm embarrassed that someone has thought that was a good logo. We've so many great designers in the UK and that's the best they came up with, shocking.

More than that, I think this has brought the world closer together than anything in recent memory. Everybody, regardless of race, creed, political alignment or nationality, can agree that this logo is complete and utter ****.

So, there's an ad at the top of the page for the logo's site.
London 2012 - About our new look (film version)
These will be a Games where everyone is invited to join in.
Hand over your money, you proles.
A Games where people are inspired to either take part in the many sports, cultural, educational and community events leading up to 2012 or inspired to achieve personal goals.
Too right. Get as far away from these stupid tossers as possible.
London 2012 will be a Games that make the most of exciting new technology to get people closer to the action they want to see, when, where and how they want to experience it. It will be a Games that will showcase cutting edge environmental technology
Ahahahahahahahahaha. It's f____ed then. It'll be the most hilarious train crash of an event since Sam Fox hosted the Brits.

The logo is a success because it's so shockingly bad everyone remembers it. Do you remember when the Atlanta logo was revealed? Do you even remember what it looks like?
I cannot remember a single Olympic logo off the top of my head, and I'm pretty sure that most of you can't remember them either without having to Google them first and pretend that you knew all along. Did you honestly remember how the 2006 logo was some sort of little star pattern, or that the 96 logo was some sort of boring torch with stars? No...
