Do we really need a thread just for Pasadena? Let's make this a thread for anyone wanting to meet up with other people in line.

I would like to discourage anyone from lining up in San Diego. The UV index is expected to be high and with increasing rates of skin cancer these days, it's just not worth it.

I have to make a flight at 7:30 on Friday evening. I can't be at an Apple or at&t store at 6 and make the flight. Maybe it's a good thing since I should put the $600 towards moving next month.
Anyone going to be camping out in Tampa?

I be at the Apple store around 5:00pm, if I can't get one then I'll just wait. I just can't fathom waiting that long for a cell phone.

The first guy seems suspicious to me. In the interview, he was like "yeah, I'm an Apple fan, but I don't have an iPod or a Mac" and when asked what he would do with the iPhone, he was like "I don't know. I might keep it."

As I suspected, he's not really an Apple fan per se. He's a "waiting in line" fan, if you can believe it.

That is some funny stuff. That guy has a pretty unique gig goin there. More power to him I guess.
One thing to note, when he finally steps into the Apple Store at 6:00pm on Friday night, he's going to be one stanky mofo! 5 days without a shower, in the summer, in NY, dear lord. I'm glad I'm not an Apple Employee at that store right about now.

Where did you hear that?! That's a lot better than the 100 quote I read earlier.

That's crazy. He has a wikipedia entry. The guy waits in line to be the first for so many things.

What is the line etiquette for this sort of thing? If you must leave the line for the restroom, food, etc? I'd like to bring a chair on Friday morning, but what do I do with it just before 6pm?

I get the sinking feeling that even thinking about waiting on line will be a waste of time if I don't get there by 9am.
For a phone.

Well when my friend waited in line for a Wii they made a list of what order they were in and as more people came they just added to the list so if someone had to leave they would have there spot, I believe the made a rule that if you left longer for then an hour you would lose your spot. I might wait, I might not, there are a lot of AT&T stores near me I'm wondering how spread out people will be between stores and since some people are locked into contracts it's not like waiting for a ipod that everyone can buy and use.

I've never really waited in line for very long for something, but common sense and courtesy would say that you could rely on your fellow line waiters to save your place while you went to the bathroom, and you should do the same for them. I wouldn't leave for very long, though. I could totally see some selfish types showing up and then leaving for hours at a time, and I personally wouldn't stand for that. At most, you might be able to go get some coffee or something, and maybe offer to get other people something as well. I know that I'll be able to park just a few feet away from the store, so I plan on putting some supplies in my car.
Bringing a chair sounds like a good idea.

People will be chill about it. Once you are there, you get a spot as long as you don't just abandon it. Bathroom, getting food and coming back etc. Everyone in line has to do it.
The only thing you can't really do is let someone join you if they are planning on getting one. Drop-by guests are welcome by everyone though as you get tired of your neighbor pretty quick.

Things I've camped out for:
Black Friday 2002
Black Friday 2003
PlayStation 2 launch
Ikea grand opening (free chair)
Wii (just two hours)
And now... a cell phone.
Who's in West LA? I'm debating going to 3rd Street Promenade store, Century City, Simi Valley (just cause its far and secluded), Glendale (indoors... won't get killed by weather), or Pasadena. Screw The Grove.... it will be a nut house there.

I am near The Grove. There is also an ATT store on Beverly that will have it. When I drove past it today I saw someone already set up outside the store, waiting.
I was thinking of asking one of the local vagrants to wait in line for me.
There is also a website setup: iwait.org

Damn, Woz is the coolest geek in history.
I'm very surprised Jobs didn't get him an iPhone along with all of those tech journalists. Saturday? That's lame. At least get it to him on Friday!

Keep in mind that Woz didn't HAVE to stand in line. Jobs called and offered to send him one. Woz turned down the offer because he didn't want to wait until Saturday (next day shipping) and from the sound of it, wanted to be part of the event/celebration of the release.

AT&T store in downtown Houston seems to be more or less empty as of an hour ago. I'll cruise by again later this afternoon, and if there's still not a line, I'll grab a beer and wait until 6.

I am number 67 at the ATT store in Los Angeles. Someone decided to make a numbered list - so things are going to get out of hand.
People signed their name and left. Other people signed up 10 of their friends when they arrived alone.
The ATT store won't tell us how many they have in stock, so I may sit here for 6 hours and leave with nothing.
I just hope a fight doesn't break out when some idiot shows up at 5 and claims he is number 20 on the list.

<------ #20 at Manhattan Beach Apple Store. 5 1/2 hrs to go! I watched the faux-documentary "Death of a President" while in line. Quite creative and thought provoking.

The ATT store manager just came out and told us there we enough phones so far.
Some fat a****** just paid 2 people to stand in line for him. The people in the front of the line are the ones who took 10 numbers for their friends. Kind of a bummer that people cut corners like this when most of us are being honest about it. ce la vie.
