all of a sudden the volume controls on my apple keyboard have stopped controlling my main speakers and instead only control the MacPro's internal speaker. The problems seems to have coincided with the release of itunes 7.3 but thats probably just a coincidence.

Has anyone else heard of this? or does anyone know how to fix it?

Do you have you "main speakers" plugged into the headphone plug or the line-out (in the back of a Mac Pro)? If they are in the lie-out, try using the headphone plug in the front of the Mac Pro.

thanks for the reply.

they are plugged into the line out socket and up until 4 days ago it all worked perfectly well, all of a sudden it stopped
I've gone through all the system preferences but nothing amiss there its really annoying now

There was some discussion about this in the past month. Use the headphone port if you have to, but some applications might use the line out, so you might have to experiment. Check out this post:
