They gave 'em to all the interns at Microsoft this summer. (Hey, I'm in MS Research, it's the hip and interesting part of the evil empire...)

So what should I do with this thing?

You could throw it into the iPod Amnesty Bin that they have in the Zune offices.

I love how somebody threw an iPod battery in there - meaning he replaced the battery in order to continue using the iPod!

Drop kick. Boil it. Run over it. Use a mangnifine glass and melt it. Shoot it. Feed it to a shark. Have a karate master chop it in half. Find a samurai and cut it in half. Shoot it from a cannon. Drag it behind your car. Wood chipper. Chain saw. Blade saw. Hammer. Play baseball with it. Play soccer with it. Give it to a SCUBA diver and have them take it down to a deep depth. Ax it.

Ok, I could go on for pages. The point is, make sure you do something with it soit never harms another person again.

Well, you guys voted for it, and I did it:

I'm still working on making a connector for the headphone and such. I did make a fake Zune screen to put under the plastic window, figuring that seeing an iPod under there would kind of negate the theft-prevention value...

Now that is funny!

I was going to recommend walking into your nearest electronics shop and putting it up on the shelf where all the other Zunes remain.

Update:
I fashioned a very gimpy but workable headphone rerouting, so I can actually listen to the iPod while it's in the Zune case.

Action shots of opening the case:

Although it's too late, I would have recommend (and you may still be able to to some degree) you try a social experiment. setup a video camera hidden, and leave the Zune out on a park bench or something. Then see how many people look at it, and if anyone tries to take it.

At any rate, your hide a pod is pretty cool.

Why is it too late? It still looks like a Zune. And in all seroiusness, NO ONE will refrain from picking it up simply because it's a Zune. If nothing else, it's like seeing $200 sitting there.

I don't think it's quite the same. I think recognition has a huge part to play in it. It's a bit like that report that came out a few years ago that said that people who were stealing iPods were more likely to keep them than to sell them off later.

If a person sees a Zune, do they pick it up because they want it? Or because they're interested. The further experiment is with an iPod or a Zune. How many people pick up and take the iPod? How many pick up and take the Zune?

Of course, you'd have to do a bit of work to eliminate the extra data.

I think a number of people would pick up the Zune and there would be a lot who think "Oh $200! Sweet" or something like that, but I'd want to know the reaction time, the interest, etc.

Apparently telling other members they happen to be good-looking will now land you a comparison to Salty. I find this very unfair. I’ve been complimenting/hitting on random hot members here much longer than Salty.

I should have made a closet show of myself for a few years before coming clean, that was my mistake.

Wrong accent, that produces ì. We're looking for í, which is Option-E followed by the letter you wish to accent.

I still would have rather seen it blended, personally. But that's probably because I never could have done that on my own.

Well, uh, thanks for the flattery, guys. And now I too can type Oisín.
As for the blending, well, I spent $200 and got an iPod nano out of it; not so sure what I'd do with a Blendtec...
