As I was doing my normal run today at lunch hour I was astounded by the number of people that smoke. Most people my age (40) have for the most part quite or never started.

I see a lot of younger people, mostly woman smoking and some older people smoking.

The only think I've ever smoked is Hookah, and that's only occasionally. I don't like it too much, but it's a fun social setting.

I said no, but I spoke a cig every month or two.

I think less than a half pack yearly doesn't qualify me as a smoker.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

I did many years ago, but I decided that I liked myself enough that I want to stick around a while. In the U. S., IIRC, the percentage of smokers has declined to somewhere around 25%, from over 50%, and has held relatively constant for the last few years. Some people will simply smoke themselves into a grave.

Nah. I used to, but even then I wasn't a heavy smoker. I enjoy it, but it's not really worth the cost.

I never smoked and I guess I find it a little odd that I see so many young kids (college age) smoking. Its not like they don't know the risks. I'm pretty close to a couple of colleges and now that summer is nearing an end I'm seeing more and more college age people when I'm out running.

If you want to smoke that's your business, I'm not criticizing anyone but they are cancer sticks.

Edit: yeah its getting much more expensive (I'm going to show my age) but I remember when a pack was under a buck, 60 cents. My Mom used to send me out back in the day to get her some smokes.

Do you eat red meat? I always find it funny that people will go on and on about the dangers of smoking when most people are killing themselves in their own special ways.

I agree, when I started, yes, people knew it was bad... that was revealed in the 50s 60s for the most part. But, in the 80s, we didn't know much better as young teens. No warnings, no age limit, dirt cheap. It was still shown in movies and TV as cool.

Now, it's different and it has nothing to do with the Truth campaign. It's more common knowledge. I have 2 younger brothers, 19 and 11. They ABHOR smoking and even the the 11 year old knows how bad it is for you. I think it's great they hate it and I rarely ever smoke in their sight, definitely not their presence.

I used to smoke a decent amount (1/4 pack a day) but now I probably go through a pack in a month...maybe longer.

I usually smoke when I've had a few drinks, most times I'm not in the mood. I know I will quit at some point since the addiction thing really isn't there. It's more of a habit at this point. I'll go a week without having one then smoke like 15 in one night at a party.....boy do I regret that in the morning.

Hell no (also an avid runner). But yes, it also amazes me how many of friends in the 18-25 age group light up. I guess you can get away with it if your young and quit before getting too old.

You'd have a point if the an individual was ingesting massive quanites of red meat on a daily basis. Much like a smoker successively filling his or her lungs with somke several times on a daily basis. That said though, I do support smokers rights to smoke where them damn please and privet smoke free establishments ought to be at the desecration of the proprietor.

Non smoker. One time when I was 16 was enough.

Our city just passed a smoking ban in all public places. All the restaurants are now 100% non-smoking, and you have to be at least 25 feet away from the door if you're smoking outside. Evidently that doesn't apply to my college campus. About 30 students will stand around the main entrances and puff away in between classes. You have to walk through a cloud of smoke before you can finally get indoors.

I have plenty of good friends that are heavy smokers, in particular my brother-in-law. The smell doesn't really bother me that badly, but they don't smoke in front of me because they know I have a few phobias, cancer being chief among them (along with the fear of something poking my eyes or busting out my teeth).

Sounds like most Americans. Mmm, cheeseburgers — there's a healthful alternative to a couple of smokes at the bar.

So are cigarettes. They'll both kill you. But cheeseburgers are more socially acceptable in America than cigarettes. Nobody walks by someone eating a double bacon cheeseburger and pretends to have a heart attack or diabetes.

You can't think of any foods that don't involve copious amounts of red meat and harmful substances? Really? Personally, I don't eat the same thing for dinner every night. Today, I had vegetarian burritos. It's not the most healthful thing around, true, but I'm not the one condemning cigarettes here. Personally, I think they're delicious, and you can write that on my tombstone.

I gave up in the middle of June and now only smoke my friend's stuff if I fancy it of a night out. (They're very generous friends!)

Hardest part was not smoking as a break/thought muncher when generating ideas and not smoking one at the end of a hard day.

It's probably the fact that walking through a room of people eating cheeseburgers doesn't make me start coughing. Or that when I come home from the bar, I don't reek of cheeseburgers.

Cheeseburgers cant give you second hand cancer either.

When I was a smoker, I was a conscience one. I would smoke mostly outside if I was eating with a group of non-smokers. Or if I was at an event that allowed, but I was around non-smokers I'd get up and go elsewhere. I didn't want to be "that guy" that annoyed everyone with his or her smoking.

What sucks is a lot of people start smoking at a early age to make them seem more "mature" and "adult" and "cool"

I mean you don't see many teenagers on the corner smoking reading pipes.

By the time you realize what an idiot you were for smoking for such reasons it's too late. I started because of a nervous habit. Something to do.

Sometimes the actual process of smoking a cigarette is more addictive than the nicotine.

Just like junkies get addicted to shooting up, or snorting powder. The actual process. Doing so, the body gives you rewards regardless of what you snort or shoot.

It's a terrible vicious circle.

I'd like to smoke the ocasional cigar, but I won't allow myself. Nicotine grabs me by the nuts and doesn't like to let go. Smoked the occasional cigar for about 6 months, then a cigar a day, then a morning and evening cigar every day. That got too expensive so I started buying cheap packs of cigars, which gave me more cigars kicking around to smoke constantly...
Quit 2 years ago. I imagine if I had a few cigars, maybe throw in some life stress, I'd be having the jones all over again.

Best way to quit: cold turkey. If you don't have the fortitude quit cold turkey you ain't a gonna quit.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

I don't reek of cigarettes or get cancer after walking by a girl smoking on the street corner either.

Technically, I don't have any objections to picking up a half-human, half-borg female. I hear they're quite sexy, if a little demanding.
