Whatever. Had they not done it, they'd get my money for Heroes. Guess they have one less viewer now.

Your eyes are worth more to advertisers than you're willing to pay to watch an episode.

I've been legally watching NBC in HD for free for a while now.

eesh. Available in the USA only. WTF - I'm Canadian and pay to get 4 different NBC stations but I'm not allowed to access the same stuff someone in the US who may not even have television can get? Get bent, NBC.

“With the creation of this new service, we are acknowledging that now, more than ever, viewers want to be in control of how, when and where they consume their favorite entertainment,” said Vivi Zigler, the executive vice president of NBC Digital Entertainment.

I guess that's why:

The programs, including “Heroes” and “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” will be offered for a week immediately after their initial broadcasts. Commercials will be embedded in the programs and viewers will not be able to skip through them. […] The file will expire after the seven days.

Although I agree with the complete stupidity of NBC, I was able to tell Amazon to tell my TiVo to download The Bionic Woman for free. Not bad.

Still, I see failure.

But NBC intends to transform the service into a model similar to iTunes by the middle of 2008 — that is, consumers will pay NBC directly to download episodes of the shows. “We did this to eliminate the middleman,” said Jeff Gaspin, the president of NBC’s digital division.

They probably could have got away with the "Windows only" policy five years ago, but in today's environment that's just asinine.

This service is doomed to fail like so many other similar endeavours from companies who just don't get their customers.

Agreed. Apple has a monopoly on downloaded digital media. There's a good reason for it too, namely the alternatives suck so much it is indescribable.

NBC can do what they want, but like every other player in this game (Microsith included), they will fail miserably. Because they don't get it.

A combination between hardware and software along with the desired media is the way to sell said media on-line. Good music or good TV episodes don't sell themselves.

Ouch.

Does no one at NBC own an iPod? You would think that one of the executive's kids would be asking daddy why they can't watch Heroes on their iPod anymore...

Letterboxed I can somewhat understand, but mono?

Other than that, how was the show?

What is letterboxed 4x3? Either it was 4x3 or it was letterboxed.

My guess is that it was a 16x9 video letterboxed into a 4x3 file.

No, it can be both. A 4x3 frame with black bars to show a 16x9 image.

I saw the pilot too a while back. The version I saw didn't strike me as particularly hard to follow, but it was generic as heck. The characters were all total cardboard and mostly annoying, this GRRL-POWER message was awkwardly shoehorned in, and just when it looks like the script is going to go in an interesting direction, it does a U-turn and heads straight back into cliche. Oh, and Michelle Ryan's acting was surprisingly weak — maybe she was having trouble with her American accent or something.

Well, I'll give them something: it's a fantastic advert for BitTorrent. I suspect a lot of people who bought Heroes and such on iTunes will now just shrug and download it illegally. I can safely say I'd rather not be forced to watch adverts on an exploding episode of a TV show. It's stupidity motivated by greed, plain and simple.
