I am considering getting an iphone. I was wondering if you can use aim an an iphone without using up text messages. And also does the phone alert you when you have a new voicemail?

There's also AIM Express. I'm not sure how well it works though. Hardly used it.
Web IM - AIM Express
It doesn't show Safari as a supported browser, but I got it to load.

I use AIM all the time on my iPhone. Beejive is a hog and now has ads in every chat window, yuck. Meebo is solid, but I personally prefer Flickim. Flickim is by far the fastest loading, and most lightweight. Also, it will notify you via SMS or e-mail if you receive a message while mobileSafari is closed. FlickIM

FlickIM and Meebo are the most solid. But just use both and see which one suits you more. Meebo's multi-platform support (AIM/MSN/Gtalk) is my reason for using it.

There are also native apps that allow you to connect to AIM.
Apollo IM and Mobile IM.

You can, but you have to jailbreak your iPhone and get Installer.app on it. Not for the squeamish. I use Apollo as my IM app on my T-Mobilized iPhone.
