yikes! check out this machine: 2.2ghz northwood p4, *1GB* PC800 DDR RAM, *writable DVD* drive, *18.1* flat panel, usb 1.1,2.0, firewire, 10/100 ethernet, *120GB* HD, 64MB DDR Radeon 8500, Win XP, printer or scanner, boston acoustics speakers, soundblaster live.
$2999.

you have to admit that that's cheap for that kind of power...too bad it can't run X

let's hope apple bumps the towers soon....
http://www.gateway.com/home/deals/offers/700xl.shtml

good thing Apple is positioned to not be as squeezed by this kind of pricing as the commodity-land of PC makers....

I'd like it better if it had DDR instead of Rambus.
I'd like it even more if it had an Athlon XP instead of the P4.

Apple has nothing to do with this.

Gateway is trying to fight off an 800 pound guerilla called Dell. They're desperate.

If you must own a PC (I do), this is one hell of a system for 3K. Too bad my 3K is being horded for a new G4 or G5.

It's still a PC box... big deal 2.2ghz with a pipeline as long as the Mason-Dixon line...! Har Har Har, Intel just keeps on adding stages, and the suckers keep on eating it up!
Cheers,

if you want to switch platforms, do it quietly.

no one is stopping you.

urm, not switching platforms. hell, i own a cube. just concerned that the Apple price premium is getting to be much larger than it was 12 months ago. a similarly configured 867, with SDRAM, would run over $4500. never mind a dual 800. personally, i'd still take the mac, and would even if the gtw came in at $1999, but nonetheless, the difference is striking to me. i guess i hadn't seen gap widen.

I wouldn't spend ONE $ for a PC, and certainly not a Gateway. The quality is just crap, and that is just an understatement.

Yes, Gateway is losing money, and Dell is making money. Gateway needs to make money. Which means they have to take Dell customers and make them Gateway customers.

Gateway and Apple use the same basic components, aside from the processor, motherboard, and case. If one is crap, the other is too. Actually, the Gateway in question uses some newer/better components than Apple's current systems (ex: DVD-R in Gateway is better, their hard drive is faster, etc).

Of course, many would agree that any machine incapable of running the MacOS is crap, regardless of what's "under the hood."

Well ... that's the three most important components! Hook the best stuff in the world up to a crappy motherboard running a crappy processor inside a flimbsy case and you've still got junk.

Powermacs are so disgustingly overpriced for their performance. It's time for Apple to bust out some G5s, soon. A sub GHz powermac is a joke next to this Gateway beast.

I have to agree. It may be a PC POS but it's kicking current Mac's butt.
