The MacBook Air's external USB 2 SuperDrive option isn't supported on anything except the MacBook Air according to Apple. That's of course annoying. However, does it actually work on other Macs? It may not be supported, but it could easily work.

It would be a nice solution for those people with Mac laptops without SuperDrives. (Yeah you can get 3rd party drives, but the MacBook Air SuperDrive has a very nice form factor and it's reasonably priced.)

i don't see how it wouldn't work...you would think it is just a plain USB mass storage device that would work on anything, but you never know with apple...

I've floated a guess that they're using non-standard power levels to run a DVD burner over USB. I've seen USB powered DVD burners before, but I think they were slower.

Yes, USB-powered optical drives exist but they can often be limited to slower burn speeds. However, the latest DVD burners that are USB-powered can burn at up to 8X using standard USB power alone.

Mind you I'm not sure if these newer 8X-compatible USB-powered burners are completely true to the USB spec. It's possible they go a little higher in power than technically they should, but I don't know.

USB is rated for 5V and 0.5 A, which means only 2.5 Watts. That's not very much.

Best guess it uses the same Panasonic UJ-85J mechanism found in the MacBook/Pro married to a USB interface. 2.5 Watts would do fine for this drive but don't expect to hang it off a non powered hub and be able to power anything else.

Yeah probably. However, the only power spec I can find for this drive is that it is 5V. The amperage drawn is not mentioned.
