I have a G4 iBook that I bought used a few months ago. When I put in a blank DVD, I can hear it spinning in the drive, but it doesn't appear on the desktop. I have tried Sony DVD-R and Verbatim DVD+RW, but with no luck. The Apple troubleshooting page suggested to try resetting the PMU, which I did, but it still won't recognize blank disks. It can read commercial disks and some home-made DVDs (not all, but I think this is owing to Windows-Mac incompatability).
Any suggestions?

Since it is seeing commercial disks and some homemade dvds then it has to do with being compatible only with some brands of disks. Usually you can get a firmware upgrade for a burner that incorporates new compatibility with current disks, but not with Apple (sigh.)
Try TDK DVD-r, they're generally more compatible. DVD+R probably won't work at all. Some thing applies to CD-R, some brands will work, others won't. Imation may work.
In general, if you're going to be burning a whole bunch of DVD-R, you're better off putting together an external firewire burner (not USB, since the iBook will be USB 1.0 only). All Superdrives are slower than external burners. Makes a huge difference when you have an external 16X burner connected via firewire.

Never mind. Computer is fine... problem was with the user. I overlook the blindingly obvious from time to time. This was such an instance. Thanks anyway.

No iBook G4 came with USB 1. USB 2.0 was introduced with G4 for the iBook.
