It seems to me that the fan in my unit got louder with time. I never noticed it until the past few weeks. When the computer is working it's not bad, but when it goes into sleep mode or even when the screensaver pops up it get's pretty damn loud. Have any of you noticed this as well? Is it normal or should I be aware of something.

It could either be a lack of proper ventilation in the back, too warm ambient surroundings or improper fan calibration. Have you run the hardware test CD to see if it reports anything?

It should be included with the Mac. First thing to check is if all the vents are clean, however - just turn the machine off and vacuum them all out.

Mine's getting louder too (2.66 quad with a replacement X1900XT) - I'll try the vacuuming this weekend.
What does SMC fan control do, out of interest?

Don't vacuum. Hit with compressed air. Twice a year.

Keep in mind smcFanControl has only officially been tested on MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini hardware and only has fan defaults for those machines. Installing it on a Mac Pro will cause the fans to go above the minimum speed and not come back down.
On mine, the CPU fan is normally running around 500 RPM. I tried smcFanControl once, and just loading it revved it up to 1000 RPM.

There is one for the mac pro. Been running on my mac pro for over a year with no problems. I increase my fans when I crunch data for world community grid or when I edit video. The fan control for the power supply does not work though.
