Well - not so much speed - right after a reboot:
12.0.1 22 seconds to for word to start
12.1 (SP1) - 19 seconds. I call it a wash. performance?
Just as a reference I started office x.V (2001 for mac, PPC, rosetta) 14.2 seconds from a cold start.
This is on a first gen MP (2.66/2GB)

No change to speed.
This should have been another 0.0.x release, not a service pack.

Yesterday afternoon there was an automatically detected software update, I think it was Office 2008 Update 2.1.1. It did not change the ver. no. from 12.0.1 but Excel, Word and PP all turned on in just a few seconds. It was great. Today this service pack comes up and everything is back to slooooow again. The ver. no. did go to 12.1 with todays update.

I downloaded the update through versiontracker. However, when I go to install the update, it gives an error that I don't have the correct version of 2008 installed. WTF? I tried using the AutoUpdater and it says there isn't an update. I installed Office in the Applications folder and haven't moved it or anything like that.

I just got done cleaning out all the excess video files to free up space and did a full defragmentation of the HD. Despite much much less disk spinning (a couple a days a go I couldn't even get work done on an Adobe project the thrashing was so bad) Word (SP1) still takes 15.4 seconds to open.
Nows there is just no excuse. I think that Office 2008 will always be slow - well there is always office 2010, which I suppose wont be able to run on a 1.5 g4 PB because it is to slow- and this is a word processor?
I'm going to start to look for alternatives.

After the update I no longer am able to see Office documents in Quick Look. I just get an icon. Anybody else noticing this behavior?
Edit: Actually it's only happening with some Office documents. Some I can see the document in Quick Look, some I can't. Anyone noticing this behavior?

The next "major release" will be Office 2010 or 2011, not some point update to 2008.

Correct. Office 2008 will *not* have VBA support.

opening Word (sp1) after reboot - 14.1 seconds.

Expose and Word seem to be friends now. Dunno if that was fixed with SP1 or 10.5.3, but think the latter.

Yep, it was 10.5.3. Thank god! That bug had been driving me up the wall for months.

Actually the bug with Word not playing nice with Spaces is better ... but it is not yet fixed. IOW, it just doesn't happen as frequently. But I've experienced several occasions where an active Word window is behind a Finder window or an Excel window. No matter how many times you click it to try to bring it forward. The Mac BU really needs its *ss beat for this one. This is the only application that doesn't work with Spaces .... and after SP1 and 10.5.3 it still isn't working correctly.

From a cold start MS word 2008 (12.1.1)
14 seconds. Second start (warm startup) about 5-6.
A step in the right direction - maybe by 12.5 I can get 12 seconds. By the way, how fast does iWork open (I dont have it)

I know, I had just the day prior removed unneeded languages - so I had to reinstall it.

Luckily, I didn't have that issue like with 12.1. That was a pain the butt.

Why does M$ consider all languages a pre-requisite for install? Nobody else does?

Actually, I think Adobe did that with Reader and possible Photoshop at one time. PITA.

Adobe and Microsoft are not the two companies to look towards for clean, by-the-book MacOS programming...

Has anyone updated to the latest release? I saw some points on MacUpdate that speed was improved. I'll try it myself in a bit.

Installed 12.1.2
Word from a cold start 17.3 seconds (ouch), warm start 2.8 seconds.
What can I say one step forward and one step back....
*edit* I tried opening exel after doing the Word test- 3.6 seconds. I think whatever libraries need to be loaded, had been.

No improvement on my system -- MBP C2D 2.16, 2GB RAM. Still slow as molasses.
And Entourage still needs a way to auto-close or not display error messages. These pop-ups are routine for IMAP, and the app won't reconnect or do anything until the error is manually dismissed.

Just updated to the latest, 1217. I've noticed an improvement in app startup speed (cold).

I keep reading this but can't chime in since it hasn't improved for me at all.

I have Office 2008 for Mac and Office 2007 for Windows (I can buy each for $19 through work) and on the same machine, Office 2007 is much faster. I can edit a table in Word 2008, for example, and there is a visual pause while Word ungrays the table editing menus. This doesn't happen in Word 2007. I feel that they don't care to optimize Office 2008 for Mac which is why I use NWP for all my writing projects.
BTW, VBA is rumored to be coming back to Office 2010.
