my intel macbook book has developed a recent problem where when I close the lid it falls asleep, but after a couple seconds I hear the optical drive kicks on and it wakes up. But since the lid is still closed it falls asleep again, but after a couple seconds the optical drive kicks on again and....you get the idea. It keeps cycling like this until I open the screen. It used to happen every once and a while but now it happens all the time. It also seems to independent of open applications and will sleep normally if chosen from the apple menu,

any ideas?

Just wondering here, but do you have it connected to any external display, keyboard, mouse or hard drive before you close the MacBook?

I had this problem with an old PowerBook G4, and never really bothered about since I moved to a MBP soon after.

I did reinstall Mac OS X on the old machine, so if I have the time I'll go boot it up and see if the problem's still there.

Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
1) Shut down the computer.
2) Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3) Turn on the computer.
4) Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5) Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6) Release the keys.

However, according to
Mac OS X: What's stored in PRAM

Power management settings do not seem to be stored in PRAM. Still, it's worth a try

When did you buy it and what are its specs?

Some MacBooks - mostly first-gen from what I've seen and read - can develop drive issues like you describe. Random, frequent drive access noises.

well it's been behaving recently, but if it acts up again, I'll try resetting the P/NV-RAM.

It's a "loaded" (2Ghz, 120gig HD, 2 gig RAM) 1st-gen intel blackbook i bought in summer of 2006.
