My dock seems to be acting odd lately, I will put my computer to sleep, return to it after a period of time or whenever and the dock will go from the default look to a shiny glass, almost like a mirror look. When trying to open a stack with downloads or documents, none of the icons show up, etc. (see screenshot) What could be the cause of it? When it does happen, I restart my system and its fine. I apologize if this has been covered already..

That shouldn't require a restart. Open Terminal and do a 'killall Dock'

Oh cool, thank you!

What is the reason to it happening in the first place?

You have inadvertently discovered the transparent dock I have been looking for.
The era of anthropomorphizing hardware is over.

I've been seeing this problem randomly too. It also effects the sideways dock. Killing the dock in Activity Monitor does NOT fix the problem. Logging out and back in does. Happens even in 10.5.3.

You can see the bubble around the text and the grip area are missing. This is how this bug presents on the sideways dock:

20" iMac C2D/2.4GHz 3GB RAM 10.6.8 (10H549)
