I guess I am more easily tired by unnecessary drama because I have a son who's just recently moved from being a teenager into being a "twentysomething," and a lot of his friends are still teens. I see most discord and angst here less charitably because (to me) it seems a lot like high school squabbling and sniping. So I don't mind not having tons of angst-ridden threads, nor the lack of Very Important Issues of Major Social Import, like what will all those unemployed barristas do?!?!? I've also been very busy with what I consider really important things, like finding out why people in certain very poor communities tend to be very obese-and not just "their eating habits and lack of exercise cause 'em problems," but what caused the switch between poor people being undernourished and them being overnourished. So the latest issues swirling around here haven't been exactly "my cup of tea" for discussion.
besson3c, I'll think that over. Butthawk was indeed an interesting character, but maybe we should discuss just how interesting is good and how much is too much...
freudling, living in society requires some form of control. Without that, people go to excess. If the control is internal, then those people do well with others. If they lack that inner control, then society insists that some form of external control is exerted to cause those that go to excess to conform to social norms. This is not "censorship" in society, it's a combination of social pressure and laws. Here, social pressure is far less effective, and we have a staff that is charged with keeping things fairly civil most of the time. Again, if you don't like the ideas that someone else posts, you are free to think anything you want about that person, but if you post that you want to see his dog roasted on a spit for his opinions, that's overboard and your post won't be left alone.

Maybe, but isn't it the ultimate irony that I received a ban for SELF-CENSORING my post ?
I deliberately used random special characters like &*$#^% $&%* instead of swear words, and got an instant temp-ban w/o warning.
That kind of bullcrap really makes MacNN stand out

Sorry mods but I'm with Turty on this. A ban for typing **** (the actual star over the 8 ) does seem excessively retarded.

I have two thoughts about this, turtle. The first is, "please provide details" because I don't remember that transaction.
The second is more general. If that was the ONLY thing going on, then I think we had goofed with it. But I don't think that's all that was happening, which means the details I mention would be very pertinent. A "trigger incident" like someone posting text that is laced with "suggested" profanity, could easily be "the last straw" if that same user had posted a lot of other stuff that caused problems. Remember, we can't be everywhere, and if someone is going overboard and not playing nice, we may not catch it right away, so that person could think his behavior was being allowed-in spite of the rather prominent line in the General Forum Rules that says that's never the case.
"Self censoring" to me is NOT using suggested profanity, but rather using far less inflammatory wording. Many times I have wanted to call one user or another a )##&#)(*&)%%_)*_** whose #()#$* was a )*)*#%__)(&(*^&^^!!~ that #(*%&(#^ed every *)(*#$ in town. But I haven't because that wouldn't even make me feel that I'd really vented...
And finally, aren't our forums supposed to be fun for everyone to participate in? How much fun is it when people are "hinting" at using profanity. Assuming the context isn't a quote or a sarcastic or ironic statement, even hinting that one wants to use such profanity makes the post sound rude and mean, and it's all the more so because the poster makes the reader use his imagination to fill in the blanks. So is it "fun" for everyone when such rudeness shows up?

I'll try to keep this short and sweet:
I think 6 months ago things were getting a out of hand.
I think the Lounge mods have now overcorrected for the problem.
The end.

ghporter: that's just the thing... you've touched on an important topic, and that is context. The problem is that the current rules and the way they are enforced do a great job with keeping clowns like Cash at bay and MacNN as a whole relatively civil, but they simultaneously make it difficult for innocent and good natured humor to take place without a drawn out thread debating the technicalities of the various rules we have in place. Many poster's styles, including my own, are rather extreme in nature... We live in a time where extreme humor is sort of common and relatively normal. However, that doesn't mean that they have to be designed to be offensive.
For instance, my pants pooping thread was not designed to offend anybody. If people are offended by it, I genuinely think that they are going to have some difficulty with MacNN as a whole at even its tamest times (e.g. the hot girls thread, threads with sexual inuendo, etc.). If there are grievences with it, I would imagine most of them would involve being irritated before being genuinely offended. However, obviously there is no way we can take out all sources of irritants for everybody that visits MacNN, nor should we.
So, I guess there is a choice to be made: do we want a sort of vanilla Disney like version of MacNN, or do we want a slightly more PG version that has the potential to be a lot more fun for some, and less pleasing for others?
I guess the art of being a mod involves knowing when to crack down on things, and when to cut some slack. I would imagine that these periods come and go in cycles just about anywhere...

Whatever the mod thought abotu it, I didn't get a warning.
Once again, I was immediately banned w/o warning.
I was told before that bans w/o warning would not happen (except spammers), but it repeatedly happens in reality.

Besson, I think you have a good point about context, but I also think that expressing that context appropriately so that it's clear what the context is is a major problem. Much of humor is cultural, and amazingly a lot of it, while basically universal, is fairly locally cultural. I just read a tiny filler story in the paper about someone having found ancient jokes, and I didn't think they were funny. Why? Because I didn't understand their context. If we on the staff don't see the context as being intentional humor, how can we react appropriately?
I don't suggest that anyone wants a watered down, "all PG or lower, all the time" set of forums. But I think that there have been way too many instances when humor or even silliness has turned stupid and mean, and a lot of people forget how mean they got. We have users that don't just remember grudges, they nurse them, tending them like a prized rose so they can trot them out for all to see, usually at times when they cause the most dissent and nastiness. We also have users that are sort of sensitive (I was that way early on) and take offense more easily than they should. How do we balance those two sets of users and still let everyone have fun?
It's like having a rule at a party that says "since we had so many problems with people getting thrown into the pool in the last three parties, we're going to keep the pool locked." People will usually remember how the "fun" got started, but not how many people lost keys, had their cell phones ruined, and were humiliated by having their fancy clothes ruined. And so people at the party will complain and gripe, rather than even noticing the "since we had so many problems" part of the rule.
So maybe Dakar is right that we over corrected. We're learning too, and to make things more complicated, while the staff is a group with relatively stable membership, the rest of the users are anything but stable in who's a member and what they're doing. I don't think we overshot by very much at all, but it's possible that many Lounge regulars disagree with me on that.

I think by nature of the Internet, you have some people being passive-aggressive. Some people here just like to argue for argument's sake, it seems. Nothing wrong with pushing buttons or good-natured smack talk or even friendly mocking of a person or their beliefs. But there are a number of posters who take it too far, not letting it drop, crossing the line from friendly banter to unfriendly badgering.

So what do we do about those posters? Let them dominate discussion with their crap or create rules to keep them in line or cut them off?

I don't believe you can create rules for such people. By their very nature they're extremely sneaky and look/post much like any other poster - in fact, a lot of the time the person opposing (or victim of) the passive-aggressive donkeyorifice ends up looking like the one at fault. Also, they're very hard for mods to spot since you pretty much have to be in direct contact/discussion/argument with them to weed them out.

Huh ? I mean, really, isn't that why the Lounge was created in the first place ? Inane and endless discussions about things that mostly don't matter - just for the fun of it ?
Some here take the intarwebs way to serious.

Second, we have lost some members either through banning, or just plain leaving. Those people were posting a lot (regardless of the quality) in the lounge.
While I may not be a heavy hitter, my usage here has trailed off this summer. I pop in from time to time but I've been posting less in the lounge because there is less to threads that interest me.
I agree with you with it being summer and people not wanting to be sitting behind their computers.

I think the forums are a little slower, but not as slow as other forums that I've been on. I just wish that the "GUI Customization" forum would pick up a little.

I've spent my life being precise and detailed. It's a hard habit to break. Sorry you think I'm being egotistical. I'm not. I'm trying to just fully express my thoughts. I don't like to leave people wondering what I mean. Short enough for you?

I spent half of my military career as a technical training instructor. 12 years of being The Knower of All Things means that when you state something, you state it with background, details, sources and citations, and an analysis of how your point fits into the grand scheme of things. This habit pattern comes from being called to task for misstatements and stumble-tongued phrasing. It is not cool to have a student point out how you're wrong, where you went wrong, and how to fix it. This happened enough times (three I think) to ingrain in me an intense hatred for not saying what I want to say correctly. I don't mind being wrong in general, but I hate being wrong on facts.
To add to this issue, I'm in a graduate professional program where if I'm not writing an involved paper at the moment it's because I just turned one in. With full APA citations.

What I meant was:
[GHPORTER] From the examples I have seen, ghporter's text messages must be of significant length. Everything would be spelled out with no room for misunderstanding on the part of the person on the receiving end of the txt message. They would have the need to scroll down the screen to understand the context of the message and the exact reason why he felt the need to txt message the recipient. Many words would be used and they would be placed in exact proper order thereby allowing no misunderstanding to have taken place between the person sending the txt, ghporter, and the recipient. I am sorry, I just cannot drag this our any longer.[/GHPORTER]
ghporter In regards to twitter, twitter only allows 142 characters per twit, so there fore the twits are probably broken or in multiple twits. so, wo
ghporter uld you twits be broken mid word or would you round them off to the nearest word? Clearly twitter poses challenges for you. it is a neat
ghporter concept, but it would to be the kind of thing that would appeal to me. I would find it frustrating and just would not do it.
Have I taken a joke a little too far? SOP for me.

This is actually funny.
I use the forums, and (as of late) the lounge because there is no one in my office that I would consult for decent conversation.
(now that I have broken up with the girl in accounts I have learned one thing... never date a co-worker, slander results)
I think of the lounge as a (sometimes) somewhat amusing distraction, where I can get the (somewhat) twisted viewpoints on mundane/irrelevant subjects from somewhat like-minded people - this is part of MacNN.
I am not sure how relevant this response is, but thats my view on el lounge.
